"I think that's how Chicago got started. A bunch of people in New York said, 'Gee, I'm enjoying the crime and the poverty, but it just isn't cold enough. Let's go west.'"

dumbass quote of the day...

"Shareef was born in the United States and converted to Islam, officials said. They believe he might have learned about jihad through videos and Web sites."

I was oblivious til home after work. Terrible news.

My daughter and I are going down to the city today to soak up Christmas but our train lands at that station. Hope it's open.

Anyone for Christkindlmarket?

When I had to live there I felt like shooting someone. Other than being the armpit of the US, I got nothing against Chicago.

WOW....well the people who say the IFs can't hit here...(LOL). Course its like the British in 1930's who told Churchill to disarm and show Hitler that England was not a threat.....how'd that work out?

i have decided i hate living in the city/suburbs. it's the traffic i mostly hate. i would do just about anything to get out. chicagoland has gotten progressively worse over the past 10 years. i am in a job where i have to drive almost every day and i can honestly say that i believe the traffic thing will have taken years off my life... if i survive because of all the crazy drivers.

sounds like you need a short vacation from the city. I hear the weather is going to be nice on the weekend starting 15th-17th down in deam....

My little section is not so bad but as I've stated before I drive through cow country to get in to the outer burbs for work.

My favorite is how people here speed around each other trying to "win". A major road I drive in off hours has partially timed lights. 50-55 and your golden. It gets clogged up every morning by people who feel a need to go faster than the other guy. DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?? In Detroit there's an unwritten rule. On 8 mile and Telegraph you drive 50. That way almost nobody has to stop for a light for miles and miles.

To deal with real suburban Chicago traffic every day would be a nightmare. Jimmysan, move your family out my way :-) I need some adventurous neighbors.

I can relate.

If I recall correctly you're in Woodstock. I'm in Mundelein.

Dhutch, you brought back the memory of timing the lights in Detroit and I haven't lived there in 33 years.

WOW...20 mins worst case scenario I am in town....one of the things about living in a Small town is that the traffic we #&%!$ about is stuff the big cities would dream of.

Yeah, I'm in the small town of Woodstock. It's easy here....as long as you are traveling west or north. I'm happy with the choice, this town is almost too cute to believe.

The other thing I've noticed is the proliferation of personalized license plates in the area. It makes me wonder if people are trying to compensate for the impersonalization of a major metropolitan area. Never seen so many!

I used to go up to Batavia for the Illinois State Chili Championship. I actually liked it out there.

When I was still with ServiceMaster, I went to Downers Grove once a month to check in with the powers that be in the "ivory tower". I sort of missed that place after we sold that division to AraMark.

Haven't been to Chicago since. Dammit, next spring, I might just take a road trip to the big city.

I had so much fun down there over Thanksgiving, but I just felt so much better as I drove north. I lived there 25 years, but I don't think I ever could again. A person makes sacrifices, mostly finacially to live up north. But I think it's worth it.
