I've been around, hibernating, to borrow your term. And no, I wasn't posting from work. That's never really been my thing. But I'm not surprised you'd jump to the wrong conclusion, it must be habit by now, champ.

I can't believe you'd think I'm thin-skinned and bigoted!! It breaks my heart, really! I'm not sure I'll be able to sleep tonight. I'd really be bothered by it if it was anyone but you saying it, but since it's like most of your opinions and not based on any evidence, I'll probably survive. Maybe.

Listen tiger, you really need to learn to enjoy life and let go of some of that angst, even when you're dealt a bad hand. Life's too short for you to get upset when someone throws a good natured jab at you. Honestly, if I knew you got so tore up about North vs. South jokes, I wouldn't have said anything about you and Stovie. Or maybe its the thought of getting in a cage with Stovie that scare you, I'm not sure.

Upon moving home after 10 years in the south, I was surprised to find many of my childhood friends sitting in a bar on a Saturday (nothing new there), wearing their Dale Earnhardt jackets, watching NASCAR and chewing tobacco. They are also much more conservative politically and religiously than I remembered. All we're missing is the weather and the grits.”

I left HALF A FREAKIN' BEERon the bar of a Northern Arizona (had to travel there from S. Utah, heh!) tavern after overhearing two very shorthaired white boys strategizing about the nights upcoming... ummm, "activities". Seems they were aiming to break a few el bonos and/or make a few others redder men than they already were. Mega rednecks, imo. Being alone and 2000 miles from home, I got scarcer than the blue-bellies of The Great Skidaddle.

Saw a van plastered with haniously racist bumper stickers in Galesburg, IL. Like nothing I've ever seen... anywhere.

Did see quite a sight in a late-night convenience store in Wakulla, FL - heart of the Redneck Riviera. A white guy in longish cutoffs and combat boots was also wearing a tee shirt with the words
"The KKK is gettin bigger
Ain't you glad you're not a Ni**er"
on the back. There were several Black folks in the store, too! I managed to contain my laughter until I got out to the truck...


Southern Hospitality is a hoax. The Good People of the States of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montanna are as friendly as anywhere I've been. Philadelphia and New York City, too.

I was moved to check out a book before leaving the library last night:

That quote was from the book Don't Know Much About The Civil War by Kenneth C. Davis.

Davis also quoted much of Frederic Douglass. One was pertaining to Douglass' not knowing who his father was. That reminded me of a conversation I once had with Cynthia McKen... er, Walker, a quite comely and intelligent Home Ec. teacher I was dating at the time. She also happened to be Black.

At that time, I was neck deep in Googling everything I could think of in an effort to search out my Southern American heritage - I was actually toying with the idea of becoming a member of The Sons of Confederate Veterans. The motive there was to help me promote the notion of what the Confederate battle flag meant to me, and millions like me. Our state flag was under attack because it contained the Cross of St. Andrew in addition to the seal of the Great State of Georgia. The battle flag represents racism to many, I understand that - emphatically(?). But it represents something to me that to this day I cannot put wholly into words. BTW, in 1989, in my Speech 108 course at Gordon College, the subject of my required "persuasion" speech was about removing the cross from our flag. Not because it portrayed a negative image, but because it had been kidnapped by certain groups as a symbol of hate and modern-day rebellion. This type of disrespect and dessecration was, and still is, totally unacceptable to me. I did not want the image of my homeland confused with the idealogies of such groups as the Hells Angels or the white supremecist movement. See the film A Clockwork Orange.

So Cynth and I are driving along, and I'm babbling along. I mentioned that I had traced back to the ancestor that first purchased the property from whence I was borne. He was also a veteran of the War (he had moved to Colquitt County just two years before the seccession of Georgia).

I then turned and asked about her ancestory - what was I thinking? She knew only of her grandmother, who was still at home in their native Lynchburg, Virginia. Though her grandmother was born in the 20th century, and her mother well after emancipation, they likely had been born at home, and were likely illiterate to the point of not maintaining any sort of record. Or something theretofore not considered by my cosmopolitan self.

I felt small. I had nauseated myself. I had been terribly insensitive. It was a humbling experience of the highest order.

“I walked the dogs before coming into the library. Across the street is Stonewall Confederate Cemetery. There are over 500 Confederates buried there, and one brave soul who fell for the Union while serving in the 85th Illinois Infantry Regiment. The other Union dead were likely exhumed and returned north.

There are also three historical markers describing various war highlights from here, Griffin, GA. One marker tells that Kentucky's Orphan Brigade - named thus because of Kentuckys neutrality - was outfitted with captured Union horses, and became a mounted infantry unit - all six regiments.

You can't sling a cat here on the Georgia Piedmont without it landing on hallowed ground. Atroscities beyond the imagination occured in every county around here. This is where I was raised an American. This is my home. The events are my past - indeed, my heritage.

I will probably attend festivities at Confederate Memorial Park in Albany on the 13th. Come with!
