Might be good for trail maintenance or ranger patrols, but I doubt anyone on this board would be caught out on one for a hike...

That thing wouldn't get you very far on most of the trails I hike.

you could use one of these as a climbing anchor for places like the swift camp creek trail we were on recently...

Actually crash, it might be more fun to just deflate the tires and them make the person carry it back out.

I think it would be more fun to get the segway from them (maybe when they're clutching their eye crying because CB hit them with a stick?), drive it five miles down the trail and leave it. =)

I'm with Sass, unless it's Nowslimmer or Chili or Cyndee (bad knee or hip?) on it.

You can bet as the Boomers get older, people will be attempting to get more and more of these things out on the trail.

I'm thinking of running with the flat tire idea and starting an on-trail AAA-type service for people who need a tow or a flat fixed...

LMAO @ Lumber!

Those things seem like they'd be about 500 times more trouble than they're worth.

Most trails around here don't allow wheeled vehicles on them anyways.

I guess we will be able to tell if we are in a bad part of the forest by the abandonded, burned out and grafittied segways along the side of the trail.

I've ridden one of these-on a multi-use trail. They are very trailworthy. Once you are on it for five miuntes, it is like a part of you. If I could come up with a good reason to have one, I would buy one. As of yet, I really don't have any reason to own one. They would be great for patroling and in a job where you are running from one location to another, but for general trail use, not much value. I rode one for about four miles on trails. It is a lot faster than I could walk, but a lot slower than I could bike.

Don't knock it until you try it.

It would probably be like the 4-wheeler I bought once. I would end up with the 4-wheeler a mile north of me and my pick-up a mile south of me, and then have to figure out which one to go get first. I'd rather walk.

Any trail damage from the weight and those wheels?

I'd say the impact is less than a bicycle tire tread. (We were on bike use trails) The tires are so fat and the weight of the machine is not that much, so it give a soft, wide print. We were not on your typical backpacking trails though. But, I think it would probably negotiate 60-70% of the trails I hike. Getting it through the other 30-40% would be a bear.

No thank you! Standing on one of those would be murder for me. Within 30 seconds my knees would start to lock and it would be inpossible to walk for a while, whenever I got off it.

I do like the looks of the wheels, but I need at least 3 or 4 of them. Also, I would need a seat.

I was wondering, how much do they cost?

A solar backpack might allow one to recharge the thing. At a weight of 120 pounds unloaded, I might experience trouble climping rocks, crossing creeks and getting past downed trees.

I looked at these last week. Last years Demo trail model was $4,700. This years new trail model was $5,400. The range was only 18 miles.
