100 mile wilderness “Hey to all!! New to this BB. Some personal history. First 4,000 footer - Katahdin in 1959. All N.E. 4,000 footers by age 20. N.E. hundred highest at age 27. Long Trail in 15 days at age 45 - 1996. Planning to repeat the 100 mile Wilderness in May/June now at age 55. Haven't seen that section of the AT since my teens. Anyone out there "been there-done that" recently? Looking for tips and pointers and current trail conditions. Been in these hills since I was a kid. Know enough not to over extend. Planning to take full two weeks to accomplish. More if necessary. Thanks to all. George "oldhoofer" Roy” 7:37:06 AM 12/17/06 “Hang on, I'll go see if I can find someone who gives a hoot!” 7:46:45 AM 12/17/06 “Know enough not to over extend. These days peeps would want to race through the 100 mile wilderness in 2 days if they could! --- you know who you are!!!! :-p I wonder what kind of changes the 100 mile wilderness has gone through in the past 40 years. Got any pictures of the "old" days? Someday, I'd like to grab a fishing pole, pack-up, and hit that stretch of trail and never come back! last edited: 12/17/06 9:06:47 AM” 9:00:57 AM 12/17/06 “Hoof, are you related to doof or goof? They are also 2 new TT posters. I hiked the 100 mile wilderness on my thru hike in '05 and found it not much different than anywhere else, save the obvious resupply issue. Carry enough food and you should be okay, kid.” 9:20:44 AM 12/17/06 “some more recent thru hikers may answer the question over on whiteblaze.net also” 9:26:08 AM 12/17/06 “You May run into snow there in June, no?” 11:20:49 AM 12/17/06 “the 100 mile wilderness is terribly over-rated, in my opinion. there are much better sections of maine, if youre looking for rugged beauty, and comparable solitude.” 3:46:54 PM 12/17/06 “I agree, CB, although embarrased to do so;)” 4:05:37 PM 12/17/06 “There are certainly more spectacular stretches of the Maine AT - but the 100 mile wilderness is still a nice stretch. One of the most significant changes in (relatively) recent years is the opening of White House Landing to the trail (in '99) due to a new stretch of logging road.” 4:13:55 PM 12/17/06 “Yup, that's where I got food poisoning in '05.” 4:30:11 PM 12/17/06 “Yumm-O, Uncle Nimble!! Did you have "both ends burning"?” 4:45:30 PM 12/17/06 “Yes, but mainly some really great projectile vomiting. This was the part of the hike that did me in, hike for 30 minutes and lay by the trail for 15. I still want to do it again.” 5:31:37 PM 12/17/06 “Captain Bobo.....who are you to talk about racing along trails...” 6:26:08 PM 12/17/06 “Mark O, Not woried about the possibility of snow so much as the size of the streams in late spring! Last time through, almost needed swimming trunks for the crossings. Has anything been done to improve the crossings? Capn Bobo, Have to take my time - possibly last long trip for this old guy. Dont want to waste it! Have some old black and whites from that trip somewhere. If I can find them, I'll post a couple. Crash bang & Nimblefoot Agreed - lots of nice sections of trail in ME. Just kind of have this section caught in my craw for my swan song. And sorry about the case of food poisoning. Learned a long time ago (after getting the "Hershey Squirts" from dinner at the Madison hut) to only eat what I cook! If I dont pack it - I dont eat it! oldhoofer” 6:34:05 PM 12/18/06 “What's this old guy crap? C'mon man, get with the program. Is your health ok?” 7:06:22 PM 12/18/06
