LOL.. this new Chief Executive of a company takes over after a particularly rough termination of his predecessor. When he opens his desk there are four envelopes. The first is marked OPEN THIS NOW the other three are named "Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 3"

The OPEN THIS NOW reads,"Congratulations on the job. As a bit of advice I have left you three envelopes to be opened when crises occur. Open them one at a time.

A year later the company is sucking wind. He opens the first one."Blame your predecessor for the problems you were left with."

He does this and things sail along smoothly for a couple of years. Then things crash, he opens the second envelope and it says, "Inform the press that you are reorganizing." This works for a while....then the third crisis hits.

The executive opens the final envelope and it reads, "Make four envelopes...."

IF I was Sec Def? I would have gone in there with the understanding of what my responsibility and authority is. I learned years ago not to accept any position with Responisibility without Authority.

If I was the the new sec of defense I'd draft millions into the army, send them to Iraq to crush all conflict, and then invade syria and iran and set up liberal democracies like in Iraq. Next, I'd send special ops troops to Pakistan and have them attack the Injuns and make it look like Pakistan's fault, and India would clobber Pakistan for us. Then, I'd carpet bomb Mecca and Medina and all other worthwhile Muslime holy sites using Russian bombers to alienate Russia from the Arabs, and to show the Muslimes that when their god does nothing about it, their "god" is no more real than the christian God. Next in line is North Korea - I'd fire some NK rockets into Japan's cities and let the Japanese take care of them. Then Caracus would have to be carpet bombed into oblivian to let the venezeualans know who's boss.

Hmm...maybe have to get France and Israel to fight each other, too. Oh yeah, and seal up the southern border. I almost forgot about Mars colonies, too.

I am thinking that the Kingston Trio covered this in the 1960's

THE MERRY MINUET
Sheldon Harnick

They're rioting in Africa. They're starving in Spain. There's hurricanes in Florida and Texas needs rain.
The whole world is festering with unhappy souls. The French hate the Germans. The Germans hate the Poles.
Italians hate Yugoslavs. South Africans hate the Dutch and I don't like anybody very much!
But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud for man's been endowed with a mushroom shaped cloud.
And we know for certain that some lovely day someone will set the spark off and we will all be blown away.
They're rioting in Africa. There's strife in Iran. What nature doesn't do to us will be done by our fellow man.

Randy Newman
Political Science

No one likes us
I don't know why.
We may not be perfect
But heaven knows we try.
But all around even our old friends put us down.
Let's drop the big one and see what happens.

We give them money
But are they grateful?
No they're spiteful
And they're hateful.
They don't respect us so let's surprise them;
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them.
Now Asia's crowded
And Europe's too old.
Africa's far too hot,
And Canada's too cold.
And South America stole our name.
Let's drop the big one; there'll be no one left to blame us.

Bridge:
We'll save Australia;
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo.
We'll build an all-American amusement park there;
They've got surfing, too.

Well, boom goes London,
And boom Paris.
More room for you
And more room for me.
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town.
Oh, how peaceful it'll be;
We'll set everybody free;
You'll have Japanese kimonos, baby,
There'll be Italian shoes for me.
They all hate us anyhow,
So let's drop the big one now.
Let's drop the big one now.

Every once in a while I get really tired of the "Clinton Trashed the Military." XL once said something about generals deprived of dollars under Clinton.

Ever hear what Lawrence Korb, assistant secretary of defense under Reagan said to straitghten out the record?

One highlight:

The Clinton administration actually spent more money on defense than had the outgoing administration of the first President Bush. The smaller outlays during the first Bush administration were developed and approved by Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Colin Powell, who were then serving as secretary of defense and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff respectively.

Clinton's last secretary of defense, William Cohen, turned over to Rumsfeld a defense budget that was higher in real terms than what James Schlesinger had bequeathed to Rumsfeld when he took over the Pentagon for the first time in 1975 at the height of the Cold War.

I would find a way to increase the size of the military over time and send as many soldiers as I could.

I would try to get whatever nation I could to take over U.S. responsibilities in other areas so I could send even more troops.

Then, I'd find a way to quietly encourage Iraqis to move to areas that match their ethnicity/religion - peacefully.

I'd throw out the old Constitution and set up a system like a charged up Canadian federalism where the provinces have most of the power.

Then, I would spare no cost in creating and defending a terrorist-proof oil infrastructure. I'd internationalize the oil fields and distribute the money equally to each of the three ethnic areas.

Anyone who crossed the new borders into another's territory would be bombed as heavily as possible. I would build permanent bases so that everyone knew that we were staying for the long haul.

The Clinton Adminstration turned over to Bush a military capable of fighting a two front war and it did end up doing just that. Bush however unless something happens soon will turn over to the next president a military that is wore down. If an emergency were to occur in say Korea right now, it would be a desperate fight. I have no doubt that we would win but it may come at unacceptable cost. As far as the war in Iraq goes, one needs to look no farther than Russia's war in Afganistan to see our future in Iraq.

You're right Bateaux, it is and always was an untenable situation.
Like Russia's war in Afghanistan eventually we will leave.
And of course the war mongers will scream that as a nation we were not dedicated enough to this war.
They are correct in saying that but those of us who were against it from the beginning will also be proven correct in our opposition.
That opposition is and always has been to an un-necessary and un-winnable war.

Well, the best of all possible worlds would have been to have never invaded Iraq. However, the best is no longer an option.

I feel the US needs to admit the error of its ways and ask the UN to join forces and help stablize and rebuild Iraq. We broke it and we are now obligated to take whatever measures are necessary - including eating a crow dinner followed by humble pie - to fix it.

We should have never invaded Iraq. I however agree with Mutt. The only way to win in war is to wage total war. The hearts and minds bull #&%!$ will never work. In war you beat the enemy till their last dying breath, you beat them till they are starving, you beat them till they have no more will to wage war.

If this were not basically a civil war based on religion, I would be rigth there with those saying get in there and win this. However, this is acivil war and it has been going in that region for centuries -- history tells us that power and might just aren't effective on this type of war.

But Marko those civilians are my major targets. I may not drop the bombs directly on them but they still suffer. You will have changed their hearts and minds. It is those civilians that will force the end of the war. You can tame any beast once it gets hungry enough. War is not meant to be fought nicely Marko, don't you and others realize that since we have used those tactics we have lost nearly every single time. You have to destroy the enemy. I am using the wisdom taught to me by Sergeant Major Gilber Oliver. You will not find his name in any books but his wisdom should be.

"War is not meant to be fought nicely Marko,..."

Gee mister, tell me more!

"You have to destroy the enemy."

And that is the problem with "that kind of war".

You could kill nearly every person in that country(fill in the blank) and the few who remain would be more dedicated than ever to paying you/me/us back for murdering their people.

If Iraq had been taken over by an outside power then it would be a totally different kind of war.
When the "enemy" is driven out and routed the conflict is over but these guys live there.....with a relative few outsiders such as Al Qaida.

But in this case the killing goes on and on with the natives becoming more determined than ever to resist.
Decades later the outsiders(fill in the blank) finally leave when they decide that to go on is piontless.
It happened to the U.S. with Vietnam.

In order to "win" in Vietnam the U.S. would have had to kill a large portion of it's population and that IS A CRIME.

Besides, who would work the plantations if you kill off all the men and boys?
And the foreign commercial interests were the whole reason behind the war.
