“It's Human Nature to go on the defensive when attacked - physically OR verbally. Many of us from days gone by stopped or slowed gradually our participation here because threads increasingly had less to do with the reasons for which this site was established, (it IS called "Backpacker.com", after all), and more to do with simple socializing on the widest possible variety of subjects, some relevant and interesting, and others... well, something else altogether.

I still stop by now and then, in the hopes that I might commune with others of like mind, but I also know my presence - nor my opinion - will not change the direction and evolution of this site. It is what it is. And, for what it has become, I'm less encouraged to spend as much time here as I used to, a not-all-that-uncommon perspective amongst those of us who've got some history here.

I disagree WE. I'm the type that holds the door for every person behind me. I give to my church and other charity groups until it hurts. I always say please and thank you and have taught my 4 and 6 year olds to do the same. I volunteered to spend a month fixing up after Katrina when my employer asked for volunteers - I was prepared to leave my wife and kids (which my employer later nixed, but I tried).

I treat others on this board with the same respect - and spent a very very long time doing the same to Sarge. After a while I did drop it down a notch or two when it became evident he was in it for the trolling, but I still never came close to stooping to his level.

Please don't characterize everyone on this board as unable to help others. Thank you.”
