People are MEAN on the internet (TT) because there is no consequence. The gravest consequence here would be a) banning by Matt or b) being cast out . ..ignored.
We ahve proven ourselves unable to ignore. And if we did, so what? it would have to be a pretty thin skinned meany to care about the opinions of a bunch of anynonmous strangers.
In fact, being a "dick" on TT garners a tremendous amount of attention. Its a great thing. An incentive.
Conversly (and this is the epiphany) in real society it pays to be NICE. Social acceptance, friends etc.
it generally does NOT pay to be mean.
The behavioral incentives are exactly reversed, at least for someone who has a mean streak in them that goes unexorcised in polite society.

Excellent question. My point has nothing to do with making myself feel better. My point to defend myself is to keep people from slandering me. For example, a female on here (will remain nameless) told the board, when I was banned, that I threatened her by email.
Since I couldn't post a response, I sent that very email to everybody I trusted. Not to make myself feel better, but so that they would know that they could still trust me as somebody that doesn't go around threatening women via email. Those people know the truth and know my true character, not the character that she claimed I had. She didn't bother me, but I wanted people I trust to still be able to trust me. If you don't get that, I can't help you.”
