You should be able to loose some weight on the pack.

My pack tricked to the nines is only 3.5lbs.

I got my pack weight down to 27 1/2 pounds this past trek. You ask how I did that, right? First of all, I picked up a lighter sleeping bag, lighter by a pound. I ditched the thermarest backpacking pillow. I brought less food and split it w/BrianSean. I carried a little less water.

And here's the kicker. BrianSean carried the tent! Sound cruel? Well, the kid only weighs 4lbs less than I do and his pack was 10lbs lighter when we finished packing. It was a pretty easy call, don't ya think? He didn't have a problem with it. :O)

Pamela ...your smart ,let the boy's off easy now.

Funny that now after research,i dropped 10# while still with my dana and i cannot see how any pack can be made better.

So you've gone from what poundage to what poundage? Refresh me. And how much do you weigh? I weigh 100lbs even, and I have bad knees, so it's a real problem for me.

Not bad, 1/4 of your weight is 41.25, so you were already doing well; now you are even trekking lighter. Nice!

I carried 35 pounds last November for approx 31 miles and totally inflamed my left knee, I have thinning meniscus. So for this trip with just my son and I, (BrianSean is 13), I knocked down the pounds and shortened the trek, we did 22 miles. My right knee bothered me some, so I called an early night Saturday, about 3 miles short of where I wanted us to be. I think it was a very wise choice. I ate 4 extra strength advil that evening and again that morning. I put the knee brace on first thing in the morning on Sunday. We were able to make up a lot of time and miles. I did continue taking the advil throughout the day, the pain was easily tolerable. It was a GREAT trip!

I did most of my AT thru hike at 23 lbs. Resupply every 3-4 days made it possible.

SuperTroll is not by any means the only heavyweight hiker on this site...I too am a member of that club.

Miles and Weight
Now you know why I don't do long days of hiking... short days to base camp, then day hikes... YES!

Weight is much less a concern this way.

My kids still have a flashlight and set of bowls that SuperTroll didn't want to carry out of the Sipsey. He's like a walking gear shop!

I think with Food and H20 I was at 40 during the last hike...makes a difference comping from 60# to 40#....

You know for a pillow I found a neat thing. I took my Fleece Jacket (or down jacket) and stuff the entire jacket inside one of the arms. Makes a neat long round pillow. Actually it is a heck of a lot more firm than my thermarest pillow...and my jacket is a tad warmer in the morning since I have been sleeping on it all night.
