Yo GreenMonkee - if you want that last spot, it's all yours.

Due to some unforseen issues that I've got to work out, I can't 100% commit until probably a couple of weeks before the trip. So, I told sacco that I would rather just be an alternate - if a spot is still open at that time there's a pretty good chance I'll be able to go, but no way am I going to prevent anyone else from going if they're able to lock in now.

So - you guys figure it out - really, someone please take the last spot - and sacco knows to touch base w/ me if, for whatever reason, a spot re-opens.

Have fun dudes!

Thanks MouseSpray, very kind of you.

I'll consult with the powers that be and see if I can get the time off. Should know for sure by the end of the week.

Be in touch with you soon, Sacco.

I picked up the stove I'm gonna use. Brunto Optimus crux. 3 Oz. 3 min. boil time. $33.00 REI outlet clearance. Almost half off. I wont use it so I'll be able to carry it out on the plane.

It has to be 100% clean and my White gas stove aint. Didn't have a canister stove so what the hey. You might run into problems and in a sense avoiding them ripping apart my gear to see it, then the possibility of confiscating it. Its worth the 33 bucks.

I haven't had a problem on planes with both white gas and alcohol stoves. I just check my bags as normal. Granted, everything is stripped with no reminants of flammables...

nice work randall!

the distance on your maps, is that from the yellow line you traced?

I'm guessing it doesn't take into account the gazzillion switchbacks cause it gives a total distance of 36 miles.
I'm pretty sure our distance will actually be a little over 50 miles!
after looking at the elevation profile, i don't know if that's better or worse!

Sacco,
The mileage displayed is from the yellow line (The Route). The LV4 maps are pretty accurate and that where I traced the line from. I am not the Topo master however and have always taken the calculated mileage with a grain of salt, hmm, maybe more than a grain!! Pennsey ( Probably not spelled correctly) seems to have a lot of experience with Topo as well as Jimmysan maybe they could give you a better idea!!

Back at ya, sacco.

I'm so excited... and I have no idea what we're doing except 5 days on the JMT, Whitney, and resupplying Jackstraw and Gem.

Well, I guess that's all I really need to know. I'll follow you guys. Just don't get me lost, ok.

More Exit Permit Stuff
Hey Sacco,
I called and talked to the permit people at Inyo National Forest Permit Office
1-760-873-2483 and asked about picking up Trail Crest exit permits (Whitney Portal). They told me that you have to go here to pick them up:

The Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitor Center,
Hwy 395, 1 mile south of Lone Pine, Ca 93545,
760-876-6222

Just to double check, I called the above and was told that you have to be there at or after 11:00 Local time, the day before you plan on starting the hike and ask for a walk in Trail Crest exit permit. These permits are free, however they only give out 10 of these per the day of your planned exit and they are on a first come, first serve basis!! There may be additional permits available due to cancellations, but you should not count on those. You may be able to call a couple of days prior to 8/1/2007 or 8/2/2007 and see if they still have the Trail Crest exit permits available. That might save you a trip! I tried to get an idea of what the fines would be if we exited through Trail Crest (Whitney Portal), but they wouldn’t work with me on that, lol If worse comes to worse we can exit through Shepard Pass, There are no quotas in effect there, but that would require us parking the car there and missing out on Mt Whitney.

When are you planning on going to the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitor Center to try and get the Trail Crest exits permits?
See ya later.

you got it randall.
change your view of this thread to VIEW ALL and go back to the bottom of page 1, starting with this post:

okay...

i have a permit for 4 people going in on the kearsarge trail on Aug 4.
the exit is on the kearsarge trail on aug 9.

all reservable exits for whitney portal are taken for all of august.

i have to show up to the lone pine office at 11:00 am on august 3 when i pick up my permit and request a whitney stamp to change my exit to whitney portal.

i was told by the lady on the phone that it should not be a problem to change it in person.

she'd better be right!

...but if not, i wonder how much they fine you for leaving at the wrong trail head? anybody know?”

Hey all,
I ordered and got this fishing pole/reel combo and used it for the first time today!! I caught over twenty panfish with it as well as two 2+ lb smallmouth bass. It works pretty well and is very light!! I had to adjust to the shortness of the rod during my hooksets, but I figured it out pretty quick! Here is the link if you wanna check it out:

Sacco, people have been known to spend the night at the permit office for a 'first come' permit.

Do you guys know about CA fishing licenses? Does back wherever require them? I think the tickets are sticker shock prices,

Tents??? For The JMT!!
Hey All,
So what types of tents are good to use out there on the JMT???
I have a tarp and A Lunar Solo, but they both have to be staked down to work!! Is the soil too rocky for this to work?? Do I have to bring a self-supporting type of tent??
Thanks for the help!

Tent securing: I always bring along at least six of the small bungee cords, which I can use to tie down the tent with rocks if I can't get the stakes in - works pretty well....
