“JB I still have my back bro but my pack did get stolen and iffin I had found them last night I would be in jail today!I have spent today telling myself that it's okay because I will just HAVE to buy a new one! Other than that incident I had a great time and by the way Government Mule won a Womens pack so this morning we went over to the GoLite stand to see ifffin they would exchange it for a Mens version. They didn't so they upgraded him to their biggest pack so his luck got even better.”

“I just wanted to write a quick note and tell everyone thanks for the hospitality and good times for my first ever Trail Days.

Teasa and I arrived Friday and had the good fortune of pulling in to Damascus right behind Spam. We found the camping area easy enough; and thanks to Fridge’s directions we found the Trail Talker” area quickly. It was great to see the law enforcement presence at the camping area; I drove the jeep with no top, no doors and no windows and not a thing was screwed with. (More on that later)

Camp was spectacular, a shaded wooded area right beside the river. We had the best spot at the entire complex. We were situated between the “Mellow something’s” and the “Riff Raff” Needless to say if you took a deep breath the second-hand smoke would make you hungry.

No one should have ever gotten hungry around us. Oysters, Shrimp, Crab legs steamed to perfection by Hyway. Pulled pork with a damn good NC sauce by Spam. Snacks and plenty of libations to go around keep everyone “fat” and sassy.

The walk into town, about a mile, was pleasant for all. Teasa and I brought our mtn bikes so we rode everywhere.

There were lots of vendors in town with good information and displays; I think everyone either won something or was given something so no one left empty handed. I coined a new term for Teasa; she is now “Sticker Whore” because she left with five pounds of stickers for her kayak.

Friday night was spent connecting and re-connecting with friends around the Trail Talk camp.

Saturday was fun and warmed up a bit. The parade and ensuing water fire fight was entertaining. Several of our group won large prizes at the Backpacker (vile rag) give away.

At one point Saturday during a rest stop in camp a white van drove through the woods, nothing unusual but suddenly the sweet sound of ICE CREAM music drifted across the leaves. Damn an Ice Cream truck in the woods…..that Neapolitan sandwich bar hit the spot.

Saturday night was anti-climatic at the large fire circle; music wasn’t there and the crowd just sort of looked like it was standing around waiting for a bus. I got toasted on “what was left” a mixture or rum, vanilla vodka, kahula, baileys, and soy milk. The Trail Talk Camp was the place to be……Belly dancing, seafood, friends, homo-erotic belly dancing, green socks, and great Spam music.

Sunday Teasa and I bugged out really early because I could foresee a major traffic jam in packing up. The camping area was bottlenecked by one gate eight feet across that everyone had to depart through and the roads to the camp sites were single track and not many areas to turn around.

The only sore point was the theft of gear from our camp. I always thought that the long standing tradition of honor among packers would never have been breeched but for it to happen at an event that pays respect to backpackers is shameful. Bad karma will follow someone.

I hated not saying good by to all that was there but we will all see each other again.

I had a great first time and look forward to next year. Thanks again to all those who attended and made us feel welcome.”
