sorry for the double post...
but you ignored my first one.

I wanted them last year, and just didn't get to it.
so I am asking all of you, after a year of wearing them, you all still like them? How many sizes bigger did you buy them?

Doesn't it feel weird to have them 2 sizes larger?

I am ready to give them to myself as a late Christmas present I guess. :D

Wonder if they are worth it, especially because I prolly won't wear them around SC
but you ignored my first one

too much. It's really not that cold here [duh]

I know they have great sales a couple times a year, anyone know what month? [Don't want to order today and next month is their sale, that would suck]”

I've always wondered how they were made. Does anyone know?

Nimblefoot is way wrong...I know many who wear them...they are wonderful in snowy conditions when the temps are well below freezing...they are not for wearing in slushy conditions as they are made of moosehide...I wear mine snoeshoeing..I don't know what you're talking about when you say you have to order them 2 sizes larger...my Steger Mukluks are size 8 which is my shoesize..I am comfortable wearing them with liners and Smartwool socks...

I love my mukluks and wear them on all snow camping trips. Unfortunately, OR stopped making them so my daughter and I are making them now for our friends. If you ever get the chance to buy some you should do it!

thank you everyone...
sandyann, you make them yourself???? how?

matahari, the muklus website instructs you do buy them bigger if you want to wear them in extreme winter conditions. they are good for up to minus 20 if you don't buy them bigger.
[more room for added liners = warmer foot]

My daughter is going to fashion design school so she is helping me make a pair for a friend who always has to borrow someone elses. The ones we are making are just the cloth ones that you can wear over a fleece bootie or a pair of down booties.

We bought the urethane coated nylon for the bottom and goretex for the top part of the boot. We also found some surplus army sleeping pad foam for the inner sole. It is a little thicker than what normally comes in them. We are working on them now using mine as the pattern.

MH is wrong, she is thinking of "lukmuks" which, of course, everyone wears up here. They are made from the tanned hide of "Muks" Oxen, who obviously ran out of "luk:, hence the name "lukmuks". Do I need to post my references?

Exactly, those are the synthetic "lukmuks", made of synthetic "muks oxen".

My regular shoes are 11 1/2. I ordered size 12 Stegers but they were way too small so I returned them for 13's. They fit great with a single insole but are too tight with the insoles doubled up. I could probably get away with a size 14.
Beyond that, like Sacco I normally wear them around camp. They feel GREAT after a day in plastics. I'm heading to Katahdin in two days and my mukluks are in my pack. If we miraculously get some snow I may even get to wear them.

Well, when winter camping it only got down to minus 3 and my feet didn't get cold with only liner and socks...guess I'm hardier than I thought..I never even thought about getting them in a larger size...before I bought mine I had visited Steger's in Ely trying on various styles and sizes and the salesperson never suggested buying a larger size...lucky for me what I bought is working well for me...they are pricey!

As I learned recently from the Bush Rats: You can turn a pair of Neos over-boots into mukluks as well? You can purchase a size boot for either a single or double felt liner set-up. I had already bought a boot that was only large enough for a single size 12 felt liner. I'm a size 10.5./11.0 and I can wear two pair of expedition weight socks with this set-up. The cost for this set-up would run you approx. $68.00-$98.00 / $40.00-$60.00 for the Neos and $28.00-$38.00 for the liners (Sorels) I plan to purchase an extra set of liners too, as the Neos don't breathe well or if they were to get wet from soft, wet snow or water?

Cold Weather boots for snow that come with wool liners....

Natural ones, Moosehide or sheepskin, even sealskin...

Synthetics like those pictured...

they come in many styles.

I have a pair of black Traditional mukluks...
I got a helluva deal on them...$90, I think...

Now, as for the Neos...these are the most useful boots I have..I've used a pair of Villagers for many winters...I keep a pair of moccosins in them so I can just slip them on to do outside chores...I did order the mediums so most of my shoes will fit in them...including my down booties...I prefer the orignals shown in the picture with the aggressive tread rather than the new, lighter version...the Villagers I have with the original soles are the safest boots I can wear on our icy driveway...

for DEEP snow I love the Trekkers...these overshoes are great...

We gotta get dryfoot to post here. He has a pair of leather mukluks and swears by them. I think he wears them snowshoeing.

Mukluks aint for wannabes
I've had a pair of Steger's for fifteen years. They have been a few thousand miles either by dog team or snowshoeing and they are great for hunting. The best boot I've foundfor stalking wild game. Mukluks are super quiet for sneaking and getting a clean kill.
Mine are looking a bit tough so rather than toss them I made new deer hide (hair on) tops. The hair is outside and the leather sewn to the canvass. I got the bottoms covered with water proof material for ten bucks at a shoe repair shop. The deer hide was free. Shot the deer and tanned the hide myself.(Oh ya and I ate most of the deer) Felts are readily available through Steger.
Don't get them two sizes big. Get them the same as your regular shoe size and use the felts but don't go wearing a bunch of socks. One pair of smartwool ought to work fine. Maybe a pair of polypro socks against your skin if your feet tend to sweat a lot.
