I just hope it warms up. I'd like the usual 60° high and 35° that we usually get that weekend.

It's only supposed to be in the mid 30's for the high here until Sunday.

Mid to low teens at night.

I was supposed to go with a group from Jacksonville State, but it's 4/7 which is the day after Easter. I may bail on that and try for early May.

Got a Buffalo River canoe trip for one of the 1st 2 weekends in May...not sure which yet so I guess in other words, April would be better. You are talking about a day trip right?
toph

2/14/07

Yes, a day trip. I can't go in April because the guys in the office are tied up the 2nd and 3rd weekend in April with licensing test and the last weekend in the month we're doing an office retreat to the Chattooga. Heck, it could probably slide to late March or sometime in June. June 6-10 I'm going back to Jamaica mon.

I just may swing this afterall. I have very limited time off from work this year. It just so happens I will be in the Sipsey that weekend. I will be in with some boyscouts on friday evening and coming out saturday evening. If by some chance I can, I may just drop in at camp after the boyscout hike. It may be really late and I have do idea which direction I'll be coming from. Something to look for on this trip is the riddle hands up tree. Its in the draw to the east after leaving the road. You can also follow this draw down and up over the ridge then through the saddle and cross the footlog at the creek then up the hill behind the bluff shelter then through the mountain laural and you will pop out on the top of a big knob, slid down this hill towards the creek and you will be about 1/4 of a mile east of camp.

Bama, OPIE, and I have been trying to all be at Sipsey at the same time. Hmmmmm, could this be the time for the side trip?
dayhiker

It's before the first falls, correct? If heading towards camp then east is on the left.
dayhiker
11:20:52 AM
2/15/07

Yea its before the falls, but more east of the route you normally take. When first leaving the parking area go down the draw on your left. You normally follow the ridge line past the point where you need to turn in. The draw comes out on the road just past where you will be parking. Afer the draw drops down it will become flatter and open up in the bottom. The tree is next to the stream. The carving will be on the opposite side from the way your traveling. Best I can remember its about a quarter of a mile from the parking area. I thought I had gps cords, and still may.I will post them if I find them. I got them at one time but didn't enter them on my laptop.
I don't think we will have time for the sidetrip but I will give ya'll more infomation.

Another thought for the trip...I probably won't make it on the Saturday hike from camp up to Parker because I'll be leaving that day but if anyone's interested in taking the shortcut in to Parker and then making it a one way trip back to camp, I'll be glad to carry a truck load of folks around to it. Could free up more exploration time instead of spending half the day backtracking...

On the Alabama trails hiking page Uncle Wayne reports that he was at Sipsey last weekend and came home with a few ticks. Beware that they're already out and about.

It looks like I will be picking up my daughter next weekend. I guess I will have to look at the weather in mid week to decide whether she can make it. She doesn't have a lot of foul weather gear.

Could someone post the driving route is heading from North of Huntsville? Google is telling people to cut across the NW Road. This is now a trail running through the wilderness.
