they will report ANYTHING
cnn.com Front Page:

Lawyers: U.S. hands over Hussein
U.S. officials have informed former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's lawyers in Jordan that he is no longer in U.S. military custody, the lawyers told CNN today. The transfer of Hussein from U.S. to Iraqi custody represents perhaps the final step before his execution. He faces death by hanging for the killings in the Iraqi town of Dujail nearly 25 years ago.

Then at the top of the page "Developing Story" - Reuters reports Saddam Hussein still is in U.S. custody, a U.S. official in Baghdad said, denying reports that the U.S. military has handed the former president over to Iraqi authorites to be hanged.

You can so totally not trust anything they report it's crazy. What happened to checking your facts? The other news networks are not much better, if any better at all.

Saddam may hang within hours: source 1:26pm ET
Saddam Hussein could be hanged within hours, a senior Iraqi source told Reuters after Saddam's lawyer said U.S. forces had handed over Saddam to Iraqi authorities.

Yeah, now it reads...

Reports conflict on who has Hussein
Reuters reports that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein remains in U.S. custody. The news agency quotes U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey as saying, "My understanding is that there's been no change in his status." The report contradicts Iraqi state television that announced Hussein had been handed over to the Iraqis for execution.

Which would explain why they FIRST reported that he was turned over.

Welcome to CNN... if you don't like the news wait 10 minutes and see if you like it then.

You yanks... tsk tsk tsk.

The A-T-L is where I dwell.

My sister dated one of Ted Turners classmates at Georgia Military Academy (now Woodward Academy - the nations largest boarding high school). Teddy boy was bullied, used, and abused in those days. His success is his revenge. He's a #@&damned freak. He's the kind of guy y'all like to point at and say "See! If that isn't a doggone ruralsexual I'll eat my brautwerst, don'cha know?"

CNN is a disgrace - always has been.

Their existence is not due to support here in the South. We tuned out their dribble years ago. CNN Center my ass.

what dumbasses. they posted a report on their website that said saddams lawyers said the US turned him over. they reported what was said, brainiac. then another news agency (reuters) reports the US still has him. did you read the headline?
Reports conflict on who has Hussein

its a website. hello. it gets constantly updated as news develops and new reports come in. maybe you should stick to FOX where they tell you how the iraqis are welcoming us with open arms and showering our troops with rose petals

Criticize a network all you like, but this instance is just a case of one story updating before the other - and one story from CNN and another via an agency. You look hard enough you'll find this on all news websites which try to deliver news in real time. It happens

Take some initiative yourself and read them to see which one supersedes the other. I know most people like to be spoonfed their information, but clicking and reading the second link isn't rocket science.

... the first story was WRONG.

there should be no story until the facts are verified. the standard of journalism applied here is very, very low... which is not a shock to me. you have examples like the Newsweek/Koran/toilet thing and the CBS/Dan Rather/George W Bush/Killian Documents thing to hold up as standards.
Jimmy san
7:08:17 PM
12/30/06

You have no idea what standards are being applied. You could have one US official saying one thing while an Iraqi government official is saying another. Sources also get stories wrong. Administration officials also deal in misinformation, as do overseas governments. The sources have an agenda - much more so than the news organization.

It's a different world in 24-hour journalism, people want news as it's happening. Expect mistakes to be made and stories to be updated and corrected.

Your comparison with Rathergate is also ill-conceived.
Rathergate decisions were made over the course of days.
This news report came from trying to keep up with events as they were happening.

so what is the different between "journalism" and "24-hour journalism"? if one has a higher standard than the other than clearly cnn works to the lower of the two.

Journalism is a discipline of collecting, analyzing, verifying, and presenting news regarding current events, trends, issues and people.

CNN and FoxNews and all the rest are really just sifters.

They don't have the time to make really good decisions. So, they sift through everything and throw it on.

I think blogs are good for casting a wide net and advocating for overlooked stories.

The cable news networks are good for as-it-happens rough coverage.

Newspapers, magazines and books are still the best sources of information.

It's unfair to criticize CNN and FoxNews for a lack of accuracy, because that's not what they are about anyway.

Jimmy!

Yes. I do.

But someone with a 6 hour deadline is going to get more things wrong than someone with a 24 hour deadline or a two week deadline or a two year deadline.

I think that the most accurate coverage is only possible with the later deadlines.

That said, on 911, nobody was getting info. from the newspapers, so there is a place for CNN/FoxNews.

Also, it is pretty clear that FoxNews is biased towards the right and CNN skews a bit left. If you know that, then you can spin all of their news in the appropriate way inside your own head.

BTW, I find the evolution of a news item to be fascinating.

Some random dude picks up a little pearl and posts it on a web blog. Lots of people link to it. A 24 hour news channel throws it up on the screen. A newspaper investigates it fully and publishes.

And then, the fun begins. Politicians and writers begin to spin and change the event.

I just find the attempt to control the perception of history these days to be fascinating.
