In real life he would be somebody you would want with you when in need, and people can all laugh....but he's going to the bank.

so you are trying to say he's doing everything like he should????

all the money won't do him any good if he gets his self killed. oh, that's right...he won't. he's faking it.

No not at all ,the show makes SURE he is safe at what ever he does.

Is it good to learn from.... some what. But he has been and done alot of things that most have not in real life.So i would want a man like that around if i was in need.

I originally thought he was this really smart outdoors type, but someone told me he learns the necessary skills for each episode right before he films it.

I recorded them all via DVR machine. I'll watch them later. I've watched it a few times and thought it was "ok".

huh??
I must get my ass back on the trail, because I really do think he's nothin' but a scam.

I also think he's watching this board[heeheehee, wouldn't that be funny]...one day I am so happy to see him land on the trail with his parachute, then using the parachute as survival equipment... a couple weeks later he did land again with a parachute, but explained that most of us don't really land with a parachute! DUUHHHH!! REALLY?????

but okay, okay...to give him a change. IF I would know NOTHING about outdoor survial, nothing at all, if I would have no clue at all, Yeah I guess he would be better then being all alone.

How many of us would purposely go underneath a glacier if we did not know we would be able to get out on the other side or the bottom of the hill? Yes, there may be an occasion where you need to go under some ice/snow but it is only a few feet and you can see the other side.

Does anyone really recommend doing this......? Here is proof that much of his activities are staged only after ensuring his safe passage and that of the camera crew.

I agree. It's amazing how things are always so convenient for him.

I watched him climb down a 75' waterfall. That was pretty brave. It did look like there was no other option at that time. Also, when he was camped out in his wirly wirly in the Alaska wilderness, he heard an animal making some noise, they never really figured out what it was, but he obviously wasn't attacked.

I agree, he does come off as a bit of a dork, but he summited Everest and that earns my respect.

Poor Bear. He catches so much flak and I'm sure he means well. Who else out there is volunteering to film survival skills for the couch-potato surburbanite who might find himself in these situations, unplanned?

He gets outside more than I do though. Gotta be jealous of that. ;)

i think the only time something went not by the script was in africa. One time he really had a scared look on his face. I still doubt there weren't any men with guns around him to shoot whatever would attack him.

the waterfall: we all did jump creek before, we all know how slippery those rocks are. and how in the hell did his camera crew get to the other side of the waterfall???

please, there is so much I don't know were to start.

It's a different show to survivorman - that's already been done. Unless you use the exact same format at survivorman then of course he's going to have a film crew with him.

There are also a number of shows out there with people jut being instructional as to what to do in certain situations.

This is trying to be something of a crossover - and also does things that most people wouldn't do just to be entertaining.

Bear and Les Stroud both have the basic skills to survive - Les Stroud also gets location specific survival advice from locals just before his shows.

The main complaint seems to be that it's not realistic:
1) how do you expect him to film himself?
2) Would you advocate these people putting themselves in situations where they would actually die?
3) Do you really think les stroud has no sort of get-out method in all that gear, be it a sat phone or PLB - I'm not saying he doesn't have the skills to survive, but any expert knows there's always the risk of accidents?
4) Would we really want to spend an hour to see bear just sitting there awaiting rescue, as it the rescue advice most often given?
5) He and Survivorman both use things they have with them to survive - but the message here is to use whatever is to hand, not to take a parachute with you to the jungle or Alaska.

For all the criticism he gets, you all watched it, and will watch it again. It is fairly entertaining.
I prefer survivorman, but it doesn't mean I won't watch this.

the solution is to throw your TV out - best decision I ever made - now if I could just cut back on my TT addiction

That's who I was thinking of in my original post. Survivorman is the one where he sets up a little handycam or something and films himself?
In that case I don't know crap about man vs. wild.

bear gets wet too much on purpose..and to me that is the last thing you want to do, and he shows almost no basic method besides running up a mtn on how he warms and dries himself. Also all his free climbing is for the birds
