I actually hide the scale and take the batteries out during the middle of the week. I pull it out on Monday. No wonder I hate Mondays!

The hand weight on the scale is how I keep myself honest.

Weekend Strength
I've been weighing in on Friday afternoon before I go to work. This is my last weekend delivering pizza, so that might change. I have trouble eating right at work because I'm always on the go. It's too easy to stick a slice of pizza in my mouth on my way out the door with a delivery. Seeing my results right before work seems to help me stay strong.

Also, the crockpot has been a big help. Chicken, brown rice, some kind of soup, and I'm good for the whole weekend. This week I used some Campbell's southwest pepper jack soup. It smells really good. Throw it in tupperwares and it takes a minute and a half to heat my meal up at work.

Now for the weigh in info. This week I'm actually up about a pound, but my waist is down a half inch from last week, and my arms are slightly bigger. I'm not going to complain about that. I try not to pay too much attention to the scale, and more to my measurements and the mirror. Also, the good ole belt test is always good.

Ewker, I know what you're saying about not getting hungry. When I'm eating right, I'm not that hungry when it comes time to eat again. I think there are 3 main fators involved there. Eating balanced meals usually means adequate amounts of fat, protein, and fiber, all of which help keep you feeling full. The other is insulin. Staying away from the sugar keeps the "crash" away. You know, when you eat 600 calories of total crap, and are lethargic and hungry again an hour later? Finally, your body learns how to use it's own stored energy to keep your energy levels steady, which keeps you from feeling like you need to eat. Talkin out my arse, or think there's something to that?

Thje water thing makes a big difference. A trainer at golds says that water weight can cause a fluctuation between 2 and 7 lbs! I weigh in and out before and after a work out and average a loss of 1 1/2 to 2 lbs each time. That said I just hit a benchmark 210 Woohoo I am aiming for 195 for my trip this summer.

Dang ewk! I am down 7lbs since feb 1st. 185 now. I am hoping for about 178 or so but will not do anything different then now. If I get there so be it. I want to keep about 3 lbs of bellyfat.

birch, I have more fat to lose than you do. I am shooting for 185 lbs. My inital weigh-in with WW's was Jan 23rd (1st night I joined)
Per WW's guidelines (assuming this was discussed/setup with a Dr's approval) I should weigh between 139-174 with a BMI between 20-25.
I can't ever remember weighing 139 lbs...lol

I think two things might have helped this week: less salt and no alcohol except wine. I tried alcohol free beer and it was okay. This week-end will be a challenge. Have a camping trip to Yosemite.

sandyann, if you stay on the WW plan all week you can go over points on weekend trips. Remember you get 35 flex points each week plus if you backpack for some miles you can earn extra points for excerise.

Good job on the weight loss.

Wife and I started on the "lean cuisine & healthy choice diet". All LC or HC for lunch and dinner, and I'm keeping my total daily calories below 2000.

One week down and she lost 5, I lost 3. Woo-hoo. We did WW years ago and lost a ton of weight, so I know we can do it. Its also helped that some of the things we learned on WW we are now using in our roll-our-own diet.

Sassafras

techntrek, even WW tells you not to eat those meals that much. I eat maybe 1-2 a week the rest is leftover stuff from home for lunch.
Ewker
11:36:33 AM
3/20/07

Sodium is no problem, for instance the one I have today is 25% of daily recommended intake. Seems high until you consider that I'm only eating two of these a day so that leaves me with half of my daily intake. The one soda I drink every day is another 1%, and I then drink water all day at 0%. I just checked out two of the flavors of rice cakes we are using as morning and nightly snacks - one was 0% and the other 4%. So I'm not worried about the sodium. Total is what counts, not just one source.

Ewker, portion control is one of the problems we know we need to control. Those meals take care of that problem. What does WW have against them?

i have given up on trying to lose weight. now i am on a new plan where i am trying to gain weight. this is working out well for me.

...seriosuly, i gave up on trying to starve myself and exercise at the same time. now i do a lot of strength training... heavy weights, low reps. i always used to strength train but with low weight high reps... so now i am getting pumped up and feeling pretty darn good about it. the scale keeps going up and up but it's not a bad thing now. i feel much better about this and i think that is making all the difference in the world to me.

But, I am trying to walk and hike in the morning so that should help some.

techntrek, here is 2 recipes I posted for Sandyann. Both are really good and filling. On the soup you can add 38 oyster crackers which equals 2 points...sad that I know that...lol

Taco Soup 1 cup=2 points

1/2 lb lean ground beef
2 cups water
1 pkg dry ranch dressing mix
2 cans stewed tomatoes ( I use 1 large can of diced fired roasted tomatoes by Muir Glen)
1 chopped onion
1 can red kidney beans. 1 can pinto beans (include liquid from each can)
1 pkg dry taco seasoning mix

brown hamburger with onion, drain and add all the ingredients into a pot and simmer for at least 30 minutes. when put in a bowl add fat free cheese with a dab of fat free sour cream if you like. Sour cream and cheese are optional

Spanish Rice each serving= 6 points

1 lb lean ground beef
1 ea 46 ounce can tomato juice
2-1/4 cups instant brown rice
1/2 tbsp chili powder
1 onion chopped
1 tbsp paprika
1/2tbsp cumin

In a saucepan put 2-1/4 cups of tomato juice and bring to a boil. It will boil quickly. After it has reached a boil add 2-1/4 cups of brown rice and stir. Put a lid on it and remove it from the heat.
Crumble the ground beef into a large skillet. Add the onion paprika, cumin and chili powder. Brown thoroughly, stirring often then drain the grease. Add remaining tomato juice to the beef mixture, stir and bring to a boil. Add the rice mixture to the beef mixture. Stir and bring to a second boil. Remove from heat and serve.

I know technically starting up an excercise plan at the same time as a diet is considered healthy, but I think it sets up many people to fail. They end up weighing more because muscle is heavier than fat, so they don't get the positive mental feedback that they need to keep pushing through the hunger. It won't be supported by the medical crowd any time soon, but I personally think a person should start one or the other first, and wait a while before adding the other.

We have all our WW stuff, with recipies, from before. We liked a lot of it, but we also didn't have kids then. Time is the other thing the LC/HC meals help solve. Things like tumbling and cheerleading on week nights for the kids, grad school for my wife, etc. Our schedule is pretty full, so the convenience of the meals helps that, too.

My wife could instantly name the points on most things back then, LOL!

So anyone have an answer about why the frozen dinners are so frowned upon by WW?
techntrek
7:25:41 AM
3/21/07

Because they're full of weirdness and they don't teach you to prepare and portion out a meal.

Something that helps us is to immediately feeze half of a recipe for use two weeks from now. We shouldn't be eating it all anyways.

Spirit you ever have that raman cabbage salad? OMG, I could eat an entire batch.

techntrek, I thought I posted that yesterday. Basically it is what Sass said. You are depending on one of the entrees for meals and not learning how or what a portion size is.

Ever look at how the portion sizes have gotten larger over time. A large coke yrs ago is a small coke now..same for food. A portion of meat can vary between 4 & 6 ounces. Look at the portion size of a steak now in a restaurant. They are 8,10,12 or 16 ounces. That is 2-4 servings of what a regular portion should be.

BTW I wondered why a cup of onions is 0 points but a cup of cooked onions is 1 point. I didn't know that onions and carrots have sugar in them. When you cook those veggies you release the sugar in them.
Ewker
8:21:01 AM

That's why they carmelize. Yum...carmelized onions.

My official weigh-in yesterday was down 13.4. Not as much as I had hoped, but it was down nonetheless. This is painstakingly slow, but at least it's a downward trend.

I have been exercising a lot more lately, at least 5x a week doing intense cardio for at least 30 minutes. This week I jogged for 2 miles a pop two different times, a personal best (at least in the last 10 years).

This article sez the Atkins diet works best, compared to three others. It came out a couple weeks ago, so maybe this is old news....

Atkins works well to "jump start" your weight loss. Then slowly indroduce good fiberious Carbs back into your diet. Stay away from white flour and sugar if you want to maintain your weight. Unless you have time to workout like a dog. I don't, and I am very lean.

Ok, I gotta do something.

Since October, I have been walking many miles with my dog but have put on weight.

I have now hit 200 on my bathroom scale (on a bad day) and for the past month have been having back problems.

I joined the fitness center at work and I am going to start spinning 2x a week. I also will start riding my bike on the weekends and occasional evenings after work.

I have a lot of trouble with dieting because I am a very picky eater. On top of that I have a sweet tooth. I don't eat large quantities of junk but I eat junk often. :-)

I am going to try to eliminate my morning toast in favor of oatmeal at the office.

I am also going to reduce my Diet Coke intake and drink more water. I may start buying bottles of water just to measure/enforce some minimum quantity of water consumption.

Well, those are my baby steps, anyway. This is similar to what I did three or four years ago when I lost 30 lbs.
