LT - looking at driving up very late Thursday night to get to the parking area around 10AM Friday morning. How does that sound to everyone? Or we could show up later since Friday we are only establishing basecamp.

OR... we could get in early Friday morning and go climb Macomb and the Slide, and Saturday go for Hough?

soo many mountains, soo little time

Where are you going to sleep Thursday night? Meeting at the trailhead around 10 would work for me. That really wouldn't leave enough time to get wet up and Climb Macomb, especially if we are staying Lillian brook.

It is about a 4 hour drive for me so if you want to get there earlier I could leave earlier.

I guess I'll see everyone at camp Friday night when I hike in, in the dark.

Lt – I don’t need the pack. I’ve got that problem taken care of.

Cool Zach, I guess the sled aren't going to be used for this trip. I'm thinking that I might use my bigger pack to bring in a few luxury items. We will leave a light on for you.

Marko you might want full on Crampons if you have them. Insteps don't work the best on a steep hill.

Campmor on 17 in Paramus NJ has them. $29.00

For the hiking I do in the northeast, I personally wouldn’t go with aluminum. The time of year that I use insteps (fall and spring) there is mixed conditions. The rock would wear out aluminum points fast.

Ok I did some research. The Lillian Brook herd path splits about halfway up. One branch goes to the Macomb/S. Dix col and the other goes to the Hough/Pough col where there is a small illegal campsite. Bellow is a list of mileages:
2-miles – Winter Gate to Summer Trailhead
2.3-miles – Summer Trailhead to Slide Brook Lean-to
1.3-miles – Summer Trailhead to Lillian Brook Lean-to
1.8-miles +/- - Lillian Brook Lean-to to Hough/Pough col 1560’ gain
0.4-mile +/- - Hough/Pough col to Hough summit 500’ gain
1.9-miles +/- - Lillian Brook Lean-to to Macomb/S. Dix col 1450’ gain
0.5-mile +/- - Macomb/S. Dix col to Macomb summit 590’ gain
0.3-mile +/- - Macomb/S. Dix col to S. Dix summit 280’ gain
0.5-mile +/- - S. Dix summit to Hough/Pough col 110’ gain 260’ loss
2.8-miles - Lillian Brook Lean-to to Beck Horn 2660’ gain
1.0mile +/- - Beck Horn to Hough summit 370’ gain 810’ loss

My thought is to hike in to the Lillian Brook Lean-to. From there go up the Lillian Brook herd path to the Hough/Pough col and then up Hough. From there we could go back the way we came, go up Dix, or head over and climb S. Dix and/or Macomb.

What does everyone else think?”

Going back to zac's post, I would like to hike in to Lillian Brook leanto and attempt Hough peak from there. I was also considering getting into the leanto area on Friday morning earlier than you guys and breaking the Lillian brook trail up to one of the two cols if need be. The Lillian Brook trail concerns me, it was not a very direct path through the blowdown and I'm thinking we could save alot of time if I get it broken the day before the summit attempt. Yes, I am serious about getting that damn Ho this go around! I know some of you guys want to climb Macomb as well, perhaps we can save Macomb for Sunday morning and do the Slide Brook trail and the West face slide on Sunday? I just don't know if we will have time to back track and get Macomb on Saturday if we are heading for Hough. The last trip we started at 7:45AM from Slide Brook leanto and with a trail already partially broken for us we ran out of time at 3PM and 400 feet short of Hough's Peak. To go up and over Macomb took alot of time that I'd rather be using trying to get to the top of Hough.

What do you guys think?

That sounds good to me. One thing I heard last night and I’m not 100% sure it is accurate is that the Lillian Brook lean-to is one of the original State lean-tos from the 1930’s. IE it’s small (sleep 4 to 5) and has a dirt floor.

We didn't see the leanto when we came down the Lillian Brook trail, it was dark and we were moving fast.

There is only a 1 mile difference between the leantos? Sorry, I don't have my maps with me, but if felt like alot more than a mile when we walkd it back to Slide Brook.

I googled Lillianbrook lean-to and found a site where they were discussing plans to tear it down and build a new one.

June 20 thru June 22, Dix-Elk Lake Lean-to Project. The existing lean-to at Lillian Brook needs to be replaced. We will take down the old and construct a new lean-to in the vicinity. We will begin this project on Friday, but if you can't arrive until Saturday, that is OK. Meet us at Lillian Brook. This project is contingent upon site approval and the transportation of the lean-to package to the site. The meeting place on Friday is at trailhead parking on Elk Lake Road (off Blue Ridge Road, Northway exit 29) at 7:50 a.m

This was in the plans for 1996 I guess we will find out if they did it.

I am bringing my Kiva which should hold 4 people if anyone wants to share. I got to try out the new toy.

The problem with a dirt floor is if things get warm enough to rain, dirt floor = mud floor.

I'm almost all packed. I'll probably repack things tonight.

I have a package in from Campmor at the Chateaugay, NY post office. I'll be dropping in there at 9.0 am and so will probably arrive between 11.30 and noon. This is because if I pick it up on Friday and spend 48+ hours in the US I won't have to pay duty.

I was hoping someone would ask this.
Nope.

It actually translates as Castleford (a city in West Yorkshire, UK) whis is a fort to guard a river crossing. It's gué in modern French.

'GU' was used in late Latin to replace the 'V' which had acquired the pronunciation we to-day use due to Germanic influence/conquest. Germanic peoples (except the English speaking ones) had no 'W' sound and pronounce everything 'V'. Latin had no 'V' and when the pronunciation began to shift they substituted 'GU'. Via('WEEyah') became 'via' as we pronounce it and the old via eventually morphed into guay and now gué.

Thus 'guay is the same word as our 'way', just as guerre is the same as 'war'. The state of Delaware is named from the de la Guerre family, BTW.
