Kiva Questions
Got a couple of questions for you about the Kiva. I got one for Christmas and I set it up for the first time in the backyard. It had no instructions. Do you normally stake out it out and then insert the pole? Also it has the floor, do you clip that in after it is set up?
How is the ventilation? Have you ever used it in the summer or is it too warm?

Well I guess that was more than a few questions. I am bringing it on the trip next weekend and want to get it all sorted out.

I used to stake out my girlfriend and then...

....insert the Pole?
I thought you were Irish, Nimble.

It must be staked out first and then............BAM!!
In with the pole.

When using the floor:
Lay out the floor and then clip the tent to the floor to set the shape first using three points in a triangle.
The other two points will then fall into place.

Without the floor:
You must use the black tapes to set the first three points in a triangle.
The black tapes are sewn to the same point and have clips at the other ends.
They must be clipped to points across and then the other two will fall into place.

I stake out the four sides between points(other than the door side) and that tightens the shape and provides some ventilation from the bottom edge.

Ventilation is OK but there will be condensation in warmer weather and "snow" in sub-freezing weather on the inside surface.

Its like having a closable tarp.......imperfect, but not bad.
Just don't sleep against the walls.

When it is raining do you keep the sides up and leave the vent open?
LtHiker

I leave the set up the same, LT.
Pulling out those four sides gives the tent a tighter pitch and gives you as much ventilation as you're going to get, which ain't the greatest anyway.
I always leave the vent open.....it would have to be raining up to get in there.
And what ever ventilation you get is from the edges and up and out the vent.
Unless its raining I always leave the door open.

That KIVA is a kick ass tent!!!

Here's the Deal... We paint our faces, sit in a circle in the Kiva, and pass the peace pipe! But damn, our ceremonial head-dresses could get wet in the rain :(

No, he did not.

I want to finish that stretch from Route 2 to Smuggler's Notch on a long weekend this summer.

We got from Appalachian Gap to Route 2 and were both done in for different reasons and we had to hitch back to Smuggler's Notch from Rt 2.

She is an extremely high energy dog. Walking with her 2-3 miles a day just isn't enough. I gave Freckles to my daughter and her boyfriend. He (Les) leashes her to the bike and off they go at a wicked pace. Sometimes she pulls him on the bike. If they spot a deer, the bike nearly gets derailed. After about an hour of this type activity, Freckles will lie down...for about half an hour. It's a win-win-win situation. Freckles has high energy owners, I am free and they have a dog they love very much.

Yeah, Freck will be here almost every weekend for quite some time. Oh, yeah, the other reason she had to go: smarter than me.

She is amazing in deep snow, bounding through it until exhausted and then burrowing for yards at a time, occasionallypopping up like one of those heads you bop with a hammer.
Nimblefoot

Those dogs are amazing aren't they?! And the damage they can do if you don't excercise them should NEVER be underestimated. Freckles won't slow down much until she's almost an old lady. Our pointer is 9 now and almost doesn't want to play ball anymore after her five mile run. Almost.
