Knowing how much you have to spend would help a great deal.

.....and what, where, and when it's going to be used.

No single tent meets all needs.

An inexpensive tent and an 8' x 10' nylon tarp will handle most situations. After a while you may decide to just use the tarp!

My current favorite is the MRS Hubba Hubba. Tons of head room, great ventilation, ample vestibule, easy to set up. I know, it's slightly more then 4.5 lbs.

Big Agnes Seedhouse SL 2, pricy but very light for a 2 person.

That's the tent I have, landscaper
and the one I recommend every time I participate in one of these threads. I had a PCT 2 from Mountain Hardwear, but I didn't like the configuration. Good tent, I just prefer the MSR.

I'm kind of partial to MSR stuff, but even without my preference for their stuff I think the Hubba Hubba is a good tent.

An overlooked tent by TNF is the Tephra 22. It was introduced last year and is at the low end of the price list ($149). I was given the tent to field test along with a "Superlight" 0 degree bag. The Tephra weighs in heavier than what you would like at over 5 lbs, but is advertised as a 3+ season double wall, freestanding with bathtub floor. I first used it in a rain storm and the second time in the snow on Mt Shasta. I like it. 0 condensation with plenty of head room. It's about as "bomb proof" as you are going to get in that weight range. Remember, when you add a footprint or groundcloth/tarp to any tent, you are adding about 12 oz. I now reserve the tent for use in extreme conditions and use the new "Contrail" from Tarptent as my main shelter. The Contrail with sewn in bathtub floor, added two oz pole, and 5 oz Tyvek ground sheet weighs in at 2 lbs.

Just wanna say thanks for the help from ALL.

REI quarter looks to fit my needs.I would love to go tarp tent for # PLUS help the little guy.But running out lines and having to setup a certain way, due to wind to stop rain is worth 2#.

Thru-hikers tent
I am looking for a 1 person 3 season tent that can store myself @ 250lbs plus my gear and keep us all dry.I am looking for a quality tent rather than a low budget purchase. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Robincheckout the Henry Shires tarptents at tarptents.com For your size get a 2 man and you will have plenty of room.

the tarptents are the real deal - nice and light - but very adequate shelter at the same time. You just have to pay attention to your site when your pitching it to deal with water flow on the ground - dont pitch it in the low spot!

tarptent is the way to go. My 2 cents worth

No black diamond?
I'll give props to the Black Diamond Firstlight. I know, I know.... it is not perfect:

1. Tall people struggle in it due to it being short
2. You better like whomever you are hiking with - because two people will be tight.

Those are the only two knocks I have found with it - and I use it all the time be it solo or with a partner. It breathes like a champ (have had in a variety of varying conditions with zero condensation), sheds rain & snow, sets up in like two minutes and it's light. One other downside? Pricey. But what gear isn't?

Granted, what works for one may not work for another - but in light of a few short comings - this tent has stayed with me for a couple of years now and I do not have plans to ever get rid of it....

And for the record - I'm 6'2"

A heck of a lot of the thruhikers over on Whiteblaze are buying the Henry Shires Rainbow for the AT.

I've pretty much decided that will be my next tent. I'm trying my hardest to wait for the 2.0 version. I may not be able, LOL.

The Contrail looks great but it's close enough to my Henry Shires Squall's design I can't justifly buying a Contrail also.

I have the Contrail and like it. More head room, easy to set up and light. I haven't used it in windy conditions, so I'm uncertain about the rear struts.
