What is the norm per day at say 2500ft...65deg day.

I ask cause i live in 130 deg attic in fl for 6hr a day at times for 25yr...and only drink 64oz and i'm fine.Dont get me wrong...tired from heat ,but not lack of water. So i think most people may carry to much or fill up to often.

So you're saying that sitting in a hot room is comparable to backpacking in 65 degree weather? I sweat more backpacking in winter than I would from sitting in a hot room.

I don't know what's normal for you, but on a normal day around my home and work, I drink a litre and a half.

When I hiked in the Grand Canyon in August all those years ago, there were a couple of songs always running through my head...

All day I face the barren waste
Without the taste of water,
Cool water
Old Dan and I
With throats burned dry
And souls that cry for water,
Cool, clear, water

You Don't Miss Your Water 'Til Your Well Runs Dry...

1. What was the question? You need help to run a water line to the attic?

2. I didn't know that attics existed in Florida. You must be extremely lucky.

3. When you have some water, as a rule keep your thumb out of it, both of them! That is, unless you are washing your hands.

BTW, on the trail I try to carry only enough water to get me to the next source of water.

Tilt is right. This is kind of the Summerisle of backpacking. We regularly stick someone (or their thread) in the wicker man and make a sacrifice to the backpacking gods.

Lots of times someone sticks their head up and has to duck the barbs, blow-darts, flying hammers and whatnot.

For me, 64 ounces (1/2 gallon)minimum daily when I am at work or just goofing around the house. On the trail I leave every water hole with 64 ounces of water unless I'm hiking along a river. That is a pretty much at any elevation or temprature.

What the hell are you talking about? You stated,

A question ends with a question mark! You don't have one question there. Therefore, I inquired,
"1. What was the question?"
In unspoked words I was attempting to get you to more clearly describe your problem and your question. A number of responders have tried to guess at what you want. Some may have been correct as to what you want, but only you know.

The closest thing to a question is your first sentence. But it is rediculous. A day, 24 hours, seldom stays at the same temperature. Any answer, also, is dependent upon the activity, as well as the individual characterists, neither of which you have specified.

So my reply to you was just a spoof, an attempt to get you to state things better. I'm willing to try to answer your questions, but you first have to ask them!

Gurl too much water....

Over-Hydration
In the past few years studies have shown that many of us don't drink enough water for good health. Along with general healthy eating recommendations, most health promoters have urged us all to drink more water, particularly whilst exercising. The message has been strong - avoid dehydration.

However, there is a different story emerging, especially amongst people who exercise. According to researchers almost as many exercisers are putting their health at risk by over-consuming water as drinking too little.

Drinking water at every opportunity can cause serious problems, such as hyponatraemia or water intoxication. As the water content of the blood increases, the salt content is diluted. Consequently the amount of salt available to body tissues decreases, which can lead to problems with brain, heart and muscle function.

Initial symptoms of over-hydration include dizziness, nausea, apathy and confusion. However these symptoms are also associated with dehydration - so it's important to be aware of how much you are drinking.

Is there cause for alarm? The British Dietetic Association guidelines state that an average adult should consume 2.5 litres of water per day. This intake needs to be increased during periods of hot weather or during and after periods of physical activity.

You can get your daily water requirements from sources other than pure water - your cup of tea counts! Water is the main ingredient of all drinks – carbonated drinks and still drinks, fruit juices and fruit and vegetables all have a high water content.

I have found that 4 LT a day is good...now I usually mix in one or two of the sport drink mixes into one bottle to keep the salt and stuff in the right level in my body.

Its pretty hard to OVER Hydrate but it can happen.

Well...I don't think I'm in danger of it. Just asking. I normally drink NO water! It is even hard for me to drink it while hiking. I usually have to add lemon or something for flavor.

In 100 degree heat and high humidity, with a 40lb pack, I lose a hair over 3 lbs of weight an hour (but then I sweat a lot). So a pound lost per mile of hiking. 10 miles is 10 lbs is equivalent to a bit over a gallon of water lost.

...but this is a good thread and it deserves something other than my trollish posts.

when i ran i would weigh myself before i ran. then, after the run, i would weigh myself after the run. i would drink that amount of water (a pint is a pound...) plus 30% over the next few hours, sometimes with a little electrolyte mixed in. it always worked for me.

i tell my boy scouts to do the pee test. clear to light straw colored you are ok. darker color drink water. if you are thirsty drink... it's too late. if you stop sweating or peeing it's also too late... start drinking. it works with the boys who love to play with the water anyway.

crazygurl - I let my body tell me. When I feel thirsty, I drink. During a cool day on the trail, I will drink 1 to 1.5 liters of water. About another liter I will drink with or in my meals. The volumn of coffee counts with the other water in the food like grits, oatmeal, rice, etc. As the temperature goes up, I drink more. In cold weather, I drink less. With hard hiking I used to lose 1.0 to 1.2 pounds per day on a 700 calorie per day diet. But I do break my diet between trips(hikes) and the trips are usually 10-12 days. The longest trip years ago was 21 days.

This amout of water and food on the trail has always produced a healthier me and left me feeling real good. The food I eat is all good stuff without any candy. No Reeses are allowed in my backpack.

In the above posts, some people tied weight loss to pounds of water. However, none of them gave consideration to their calorie loss of about 3,500 calories per pound. I, myself, have not yet figured out a good way to weigh myself along the trail.

i wasn't talking about losing water as a method of weight loss. i was saying that if you weigh yourself before and after an activity where you sweat a lot you can get an idea of how much water you came up short.

back when i was running 40-50 miles per week this was a big problem. running every day it's very easy to work yourself gradually into a state of dehydration and this effects performance drastically.

the original question was how much water to drink per day for someone who was "back on the wagon". i had assumed this was for a person that had started a regular exercise program ("back on the wagon").

Are you talking about virtual reality hiking like you do here or the kind that requires using your feet instead of your fingers, lol, but to answer your question, which you can do for yourself, and if your able to pay attention to details, the answer is right at your feet.
