Oh yeah. I went right home and told Jon and told him now I should be able to take his Softail out. He still said no, the selfish bugger. ;)

Ha ha!!

Back in '82 my wife and I were camping at Cade's Cove in GSMNP and one day we went horseback riding.
It was my first time and I was a natural at it from all my years of motorcycle riding.

My motorcycle riding posture was perfect for riding a horse.

Doesn't it feel great to take the course and feel like you have a better understanding of the mechanics between bike and rider?

There's a huge motorcycle charity rally/show and dance this weekend in Manitowoc, 3 hours north of you, Ruby. We live not a half mile away from the fairground. Guess where I'll be this weekend? Good thing I got all my extra chrome bolted on last week.

I gave away my 4 cylinder rice rocket because I had TOO MANY very close calls with critters. Now, I'd like another but still reminded by 3 near collisions with deer/bear in 1 week.

BMW has a neat C1 with a rollcage that European PD depts use.

I saw a video cam from a guys helmet where he is roaring down some country twisty and then you see this deer bounding off to the side towards the road and into the front of his motorcycle and then nothing.

Scary sheeyat to be sure.

I'm still debating if I'm going to sell my motorcycle and quit the sport. After 34 years of riding it's tough decision. My neck is so weak from surgeries, I'm afraid if I fell off my head would go one way and my body another. I'm not sure it's worth taking the risk.

What kinda motor ya got, Rich?

This may be the year that I get my '80 R65 back and road-ready.

Awesome thumper, RichB

I had the XT-600 for 15 years, loved that bike before I sold it. The new owner loves it too.

I like the bike and it's good for what it was designed to do. It's a simple design that works and seems reliable too. I'm just not sure what to do with the bike.

One of my classmates was a cop. He told me about driving down Rt. 49 one day when a guy passed him on a crotch rocket doing 100 mph while doing a wheelie and being on top of the bike on top of the handlebars. He said it was the most amazing and stupid thing he'd ever seen.

My XT was serviced once in 15 years. They are reliable, my buddy had the 350 and I had the 600, we would swith bikes quite often.

They are bulletproof bikes and that's why I bought the XT350. It's so simple there's little to break. They used this engine for 16 years so it was a proven design. 2000 was the last year they produced that model.

Now the biggest enduro they have in the US is a 200 or 250cc. I originally wanted to get another enduro, but they were too small. The 350's were popular all over.

Check out the Barber Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham Al. It has a staggering display of vintage bikes. I ride a Honda ST1300. Nice sport/tourer and it it does look sharp. I keep getting nails in the rear tire: tires are $200 a pop. Damn!

The ST 1300 is probably the sweetest bike I have ever tried. I don't know why I never got one. So smooth, well balanced and rides like a dream.

I'm thinking about adding a sport tourer to the garage within the next two seasons. I'm finding myself looking at specs.

I think Honda and Suzuki still make a 650 enduro bike. Suzuki still might make a 400, but I haven't checked what's on the market since last year.

BMW's 650 enduro has always been the top dog. I've tried them out at demo days over the years. Total performance. That 1200 must absolutley rock!

I should have been more clear. I was talking just strictly Yamaha in this case.

Usually, when I read about motorcycle accidents, it's some guy who couldn't negotiate a curve on his bike, goes over the divide and gets taken out.

Hey, the largest fatality group now is the 45-55 y.o.s who are living the biker fantasy but can't ride for sheeyat. I need some room to move up in corporate America!

I bought a 1985 Honda Shadow 500 from Wildbill a few weeks ago and have been having a blast with it. I've put over 500 miles on it so far. I might be sitting back watching a movie, but if the wife says something like "oh, I forgot to pick up my prescription from the drug store" I am grabbing the bike key before she finishes her sentence. Yesterday I rode it to a meeting 130 miles away.

I ride with a lot of guys (and gals) who believe in the "Loud pipes save lives" crap. There is no evidence or scientific proof of that, and besides, the sound is behind the bike, not in front of the bike.

I like 'em too, to a certain degree, but I have ridden behind bikes that were so loud, I couldn't stand it. I could feel the sound hitting me in the face.
Changing to after-market pipes is a good way to get more horsepower and gas mileage at the same time. That is the reason why I would do it.

I don't make noise just for the hell of it, and I keep it quiet going through populated areas. Sometimes on a country road though, I love to open her up and make some noise! I love the way it feels. Especially when my husband is left behind on his bike. ;)

I usually crack my throttle when Im coming to a stop in bumper to bumper. I'm not one of those dodo's who sits there and revs at a light. Althea, my bike, hums a sweet note at idle.

I wonder how many rookie drivers and shaky elderly drivers have been startled into having accidents, either in their pants or on the road, by ridiculously loud motorcycle pipes.

I believe loud pipes are illegal everywhere whether on cars or motorcycles.

Ok then, what if I wore the hello kitty backpack like the one I borrowed from my technician when I had to take some reports to a meeting. Would I be bad ass enough then to wear the skull helmet?

Amen, MarkO. Not to mention waking me up when they go roaring by at 2 a.m. I understand the performance gains brought on by certain pipes, but a lot of those peeps just go for the short-stack to make a lotta noise, well beyond performance gains. To me, those folks are in the same class as punk ass joe and his bumpin car stereo...

rosey, you get used to the sound of loud bikes after awhile. I live a couple hundred yards from where I-40 begins in NC. Dudes on those crotch rockets hit the beginning of the interstate and they open it up all the way.

The 1980 R65 is on the road again after 17 years in a garage.

I bought this motorcycle new in 1981 and sold it to a friend in 1984 with 4,000 miles on it.
Yes, that is shamefully low miles.
I got married in '81 and my first son was born in '83 and................

The same thing happened to my buddy.
His first son was born in 1991.
The license plate sticker was 1992.....
The odometer read 10,600 when I brought it home.
