Boston publicity ploy leads to 2 arrests

By KEN MAGUIRE, Associated Press Writer

BOSTON - Several illuminated electronic devices planted at bridges and other spots in Boston threw a scare into the city Wednesday in what turned out to be a publicity campaign for a late-night cable cartoon. Most of the devices depict a character giving the finger.

Peter Berdovsky, 27, of Arlington, and Sean Stevens, 28, of Charlestown, were each charged Wednesday night with one count of placing a hoax device and one count of disorderly conduct, state Attorney General Martha Coakley said.

The two men worked together to place the devices, Coakley said in a news release announcing Stevens' arrest.

Highways, bridges and a section of the Charles River were shut down and bomb squads were sent in before authorities declared the devices were harmless.

Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner Inc. and parent of Cartoon Network, said the devices were part of a promotion for the TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," a surreal series about a talking milkshake, a box of fries and a meatball.

It was actually the Mooninites, but that would have made for an even more cryptic headline. I still say that Shake dude is a punk sociopath and should be left out in the sun to melt.

Some would say that we shouldn't question the Mooninites. Their motives are way beyond what we could possibly comprehend with 100% of our brains.

Some would say that the Earth is their moon, but that would belittle the name of their world which is, the Moon.

Who started out 'snarky'?

I tried to let it go. I went back and took it out. After all it's a little early in the day for this crap.

But I guess not.

I'd bet $10 it was Shake.
Fry wouldn't have done it.
Meatwad probably helped.

The fact that they were up for 2-3 weeks in several other cities, with no official overreaction, says a lot.
What it says, does not reflect well upon Boston's crack police and the State of Mass.

They are all full of indignation and bluster, threatening prosecution, as a smokescreen for their own stupid reaction.

Isn't the reaction to be expected? Yesterday metro officials found 2 suitcases and a backpack abandoned at a metro station. After a dog sniffed them, the "suspicious packages" were blown up.

It saves on hiring a lost and found person but I believe these "response teams" negate that, no?

Maybe the bigger cities are just a little more paranoid (maybe some more than others) but as everyone likes to say "things are different now".

MBTA to ask Turner Broadcasting to pay for costs incurred in bomb scares

Wednesday, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and others said Turner's statement offering an apology for the incident was not enough, and did not rule out criminal charges or a civil suit to recover the estimated hundreds of thousands of dollars it cost the city to respond to the bomb scares.

"But instead, Boston’s understandable fear of terrorists can now be used as the justification for criminalizing innocent behavior, sending artists to prison, and stomping on the First Amendment rights of a movie production company."
from StoveStomper's link.
Some people need to learn the hard way that they cannot put their crap just anywhere they please, on public or private property. Placement in high traffic areas created possible traffic problems as people tried to figure out what they were seeing. And seeing that finger pointed at me, I would like to break the fingers of the executives that are responsible for it. They have demonstrated that they are dumb a\holes deserving of some large fines and some time in jail.

BTW, what prevented this group from first informing the police and public officials of their intentions and plans for removal of their stuff?

My thanks to the police of Boston for doing their job.

Somebody told me the sign was of meatwad holding up the finger. See what being out of the loop gets me. How the hell can I get my news from people who don't even know the difference between a mooninite and a talking ball of beef!

Apparently Bill O'Reilly is going to personally hunt down and persecute all mooninites so they can no longer pose a threat to national security.

Bong Scare
An old-fashioned, medicine-type bottle containing a clear liquid that prompted a bomb squad response in downtown Redding on Thursday may actually be another kind of illegal device.

Sprouting a couple of bent plastic straws that snake through a rubber stopper and are taped to its sides, the bottle apparently resembles a water pipe, or bong, used to smoke marijuana or other narcotics.

"It looks like a homemade smoking device," said John "Bubbles" Marsh, a retail clerk at The Underground on Pine Street, which advertises itself as a rock n' roll department store. Marsh was shown a photo of the device taken by a Record Searchlight photographer.

"Yeah, it kind of looks like a homemade piece," Marsh said.

Still, he said, he was not 100 percent certain.
[...]
About 2:10 p.m. Thursday, a passerby reported a suspicious object in a parking lot on South Street between California and Market streets. The lot was roped off. Redding police blocked off part of South Street, and the Shasta County sheriff's bomb squad was called.

Detective Evan Armstrong, a bomb technician on the Shasta County Bomb Squad, described the object as a 3-inch-by-3&fract12;-inch round, old-fashioned medicine bottle with a black stopper and two rubber straws sticking out. The straws had been bent and kinked around the sides of the bottle making it look suspicious, but it didn't look like a standard explosive device, he said.

A portable X-ray device confirmed the bomb technician's suspicion that the bottle was not an explosive device -- it didn't contain any wires, metal or a triggering device, Armstrong said. But it could contain a hazardous material, he said. A hazardous material team also was called to the parking lot Thursday.

Yea, it looks suspiciously like a bong. I know that part of town too, wouldn't be a bit surprised. I've been meaning to call a buddy of mine and find out what it really was.

The last big bomb scare we had was "explosives" strapped to huge propane tanks, in a storage facility, near my house. They evacuated everyone, closed streets, cops, Highway Patrol, Sheriffs Deputies, everyone was involved.

Unfortunately, while they were all down here, the folks that placed the fake explosives were robbing the local bank.
