Last weekend, Trekkngirl, Eman and myself went to Hobbs Cabin.
Trekkngirl and I drove down Friday night. It was a little chilly. She had a thermometer and it was 8° when we set up camp. We camped at the ranger station so we could get an early start the next morning.
We finally got on the trail by 8:30 or so...lol
It is a nice hike out to the cabin. You go thru the woods then over to the bluffs and back to the woods. It was a windy when you got next to the bluffs. We stopped to eat lunch. We ate quickly as the wind really started to cool us down.

We got to the cabin around 12:30. There was 2 other guys there. I had met them early that morning. Eman showed up around 1:30 I think.

We all just kind of hung out in and around the cabin for the rest day.
The cabin was colder inside than what it was outside. Luckily there was a little wood so we could build a fire in the fireplace. I had brought a saw so we could cut some wood. That night the cabin got up to a toasty 38°.

Sunday morning we took the long way out 9.4 miles. It is basically a walk thru the woods. Easy walking but not much scenery.

Trekkngirl did find a nalgene bottle along the trail. It was frozen solid.

All in all a good weekend. It sure beat staying at home.

Thanks!
now I don't have to hike all the way out there to see it again!...what a PAL! j/k

I plan to take a roll of 2 1/2" nylon tape out there this spring, and re-lace all of the bunks.....(My small bit to keep the cabin in shape!)

I love this place! Looks simular to when we hiked down to the gulf floor last year/light dusting of snow on the trail.

Any idea what the temp was outside the cabin on Saturday night? Probaly close to 10 degrees? Almost a 30 degree difference!

I remember camping at the same ranger station on Firday evening last year. Bill Knox got there with his buddy late and started looking for us. As they approached, I yelled bacon ring! We heard the laughter and figured it was TTers.

The bunks were in good shape. One of the other guys staying in the cabin mentioned that the fireplace had been reworked. It had been closed recently

I was there back in December and the fireplace was closed. Someone tried to burn coal in it and it messed the Flu up.
Did they put a new on it yet? That was something else they were going to do.
Glad to hear the bunks were repaired also. the top bunk opposite the fireplace had a big enough hole to fall through.

I talked to Ranger Bill when TNPrime and I did Fiery Gizzard in December and he was telling us about the fireplace being was in the process of being reworked. We almost went to Hobbs that weekend but fortunately we made a last minute change; that would have sucked hiking all the way to Hobbs to find out that we couldn't have a fire in the fireplace.

Thanks for the trip report. An invite would have been nicer;) Just kidding, I had to work Saturday anyway.

BTW Wounded Knee, when are you gonna make it down again? I considered the Mammoth Cave Trip in April but falls on the same weekend as the CO Trip.

So the fireplace inside is fixed now or did you have the fire outside? I was there on Christmas. Had the thing to myself.

Bill, sorry it was one of those short notice trips. I got a book of yours that I need to get back to you somehow.

No rush with that Ewker. Sure I will see you on the trail sometime.

I have another one that I would recommend if you are interested in it....On The Ridge Between Life and Death...I finished it over Christmas....think I posted about it a while back on the "what are you reading now" thread.
