I found moneyView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 28 of 28 messages posted.
“Just moments ago,I was down in the basement in my new/old farmhouse, rummaging through a cabinet filled with old canning jars and I happened upon what seemed to be a very old fruit cake container. Hoping that it wasn't filled with the original fruitcake from circa 1930, I picked it up. There was considerably more heft than the most brandy soaked fruit cake should have. I brought it upstairs and opened it to find it brimming with quarters, halves and silver dollars. It seems the smart thing will be to find a website that can give me the value of the various coins. Kinda cool. Suggestions?” 2:58:50 PM 2/11/07 “If it amounts to $225, THANKS, you found the coins I stashed! :-)” 3:07:45 PM 2/11/07 Real Silver Hasn't Been Used Since 1963 “I thought you were much younger than that, Liz. Nimblefoot..........EBay” 3:20:47 PM 2/11/07 “Sounds like the perfect opportunity for new gear to me!” 3:21:50 PM 2/11/07 “The oldest is a 1966 Kennedy half, there are 3 bicentenniel half's, about 25 half dollars of various years, $62.50 in quarters (none silver) and an odd amount of dimes and pennies. There's also a little Canadian and Panamian money. Probably nothing collectible, but it will spend:)” 3:35:03 PM 2/11/07 “Dang, fake silver!! You could buy lots of Blatz Beer anyway.” 3:38:14 PM 2/11/07 “That would buy me a Pogues ticket...” 3:50:41 PM 2/11/07 “There are still Pogues?” 3:53:02 PM 2/11/07 “How fun! Better get back down there and see what else you can find!” 3:56:56 PM 2/11/07 “yes” 4:09:33 PM 2/11/07 “You listen to the Pogues and don't know what it is to be in yer cups? Fairytale of NY is my favorite Pogues song. Nimblefoot I wonder what other goodies are hiding in that old place? Sounds like a fun afternoon.” 5:11:05 PM 2/11/07 “quarters & dimes 1964 & earlier are silver google anything you have questions about” 5:17:45 PM 2/11/07 “Do they sing about it? i found that if I try to understand the words coming out of shanes mouth while "singing", that I develop this intense migraine after only figuring out 50-75%” 5:31:36 PM 2/11/07 “once here at work i accidentally handed out a 1917 wheathead penny, i tried to switch back with the customer but he wouldn't. i even tried to buy it. it was worth $200. :o(” 5:32:58 PM 2/11/07 “You were bartering with the wrong commodity.” 6:01:22 PM 2/11/07 “Silver makes a distinky sound when dropped. I started delivering the Washington Star in 1963 and all the "silver", as it was called, was real silver. The bills were theoretically redeemable for silver too and not Federal Reserve Notes. I still have a bunch of silver dimes and quarters and halves. The silver coins were softer and wore down to where you couldn't read the dates.” 6:13:59 PM 2/11/07 “they do make a prettier sound when dropped. they are also missing the red edge and are really easy to spot in a drawer of regular quarters and dimes. you get used to noticing it after a while, or maybe it's because i'm a cashier.” 8:08:22 PM 2/11/07 “Maybe it's because you're a woman:)” 9:25:35 PM 2/11/07 “I have a silver pig full of wheaties, Indian Head nickles and old quarters. It made my day when I found a good coin in the till as a cashier.” 10:32:26 PM 2/11/07 “you are soooooooooooooooooo funny nimblefoot ;O) so far in my till, i have found 4 silver quarters and 3 silver dimes, (not one of them a mercury). since the day with the penny, i no longer tell my customers what they are, i simply put them in the till and buy them back later. i will never ever forget that dang penny as long as i live. last edited: 2/12/07 1:34:46 AM” 1:31:13 AM 2/12/07 “"i will never ever forget that dang penny as long as i live." Check it out before you trade or sell.” 7:50:14 AM 2/12/07 “I have a bunch of Mercury dimes............somwhere. And let's not forget THE BIG NICKEL in Sudbury! Boy, was that town a freakin' slag heap or what?” 7:51:50 AM 2/12/07 Pamala “Your penny story reminds me of my penny story. My father used to collect coins in those blue foldout books with the little round holes to store the coins. Anyone older than 45 will probably know the ones I'm talking about. He had most of the Lincoln pennies except some of the rarer ones i.e 1909 VDB etc. One he didn't have was the 1921S or 1931S or 1933S. I forget exactly which one but it was one that was very hard to find even in the late 60s. Well I got one in change one day and knew exactly that it was rare. I was going to give it to my father as soon as I could. For safe keeping I put it my guitar case inside the little compartment that you store stuff like harmonicas, picks, and capos. Then I made the mistake of going over to the house of as girl I liked. Well she had a little sister and the little sister like to open my guitar case because the "fur" inside felt like a teddy bear. I didn't care, I was infatuated with her older sister. Anyway I didn't know the penny was gone until a week or so later when I thought about it. It was too late to go back and say "Hey your three year old sister played with, lost, or took my penny!" I'll never forget that penny or the older sister. She was beautiful. Of the two I would have taken the sister anyday! :) last edited: 2/12/07 11:47:33 AM” 11:45:20 AM 2/12/07 “Nice story. At least with the penny you would have had a 50% chance of getting head(s).” 11:59:48 AM 2/12/07 “You wouldn't recognise Sudbury now, MarkO. It's become a charming, small university city - good restaurants, the Science Centre, parks and cultural activities. My daughter graduated from Laurentian University in August. It shows just how quickly nature returns when pollution is no longer tolerated.” 12:03:05 PM 2/12/07 “While on a trout fishing trip last fall, I went up in the woods for a break at an old campsite and found three bills, stuck together, laying on the ground, rotting. There was a $100 bill on the outside. They were so old and crusty and stuck-together that I could not separate them without tearing them completely up, but the best I could tell, the other two were ones. I sent them to the US Mint, and they sent me back an official government check for $102. Free money! I like that. (It did cost $0.39 for postage.)” 3:28:24 PM 2/12/07 LOL Nimblefoot “Sad to say but you're right! I didn't even get to see her fur! Wait a minute. I was talking about the fur on the inside of her guitar case. ...Gutter minds...What did you think I was talking about?” 4:06:37 PM 2/12/07
