Ok. Im broke. I need a pack and i have around 70 bucks to spend. Im looking for something used, but in good condition that will hold up for a good while (since im not gonna be able to afford another!). I need something around 5000ci that will fit a 17-18 inch torso.

help with pack for friend
Hey strangers. Need a little help. A friend of mine is wanting to get into backpacking but has no gear. He sent me this link from e-bay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350058535604&ssPageName=ADME:X:EMTFW:US:11

I'm assuming this is crap? I tend to get some gear I like and stick with it for years, so I'm kinda outa the loop on new gear and stuff.

Could someone point me in the right direction to help him out with some recommendations for entry level packs. Or does anyone have anything for sale?

I don't think we're talking about ultralight stuff here cause $$ are an issue.

Thanks
John

IJ! where have you been? Hope all is well.

I think I have an old Peak One pack I can send you for nothing. Email your address and I will send it.

You know I am of two minds here. One is the pack might very well be crap. It is certainly huge. But is that a "bad thing"? If your friend has no gear and no money, the price is right. The pack says it has a 5 year warrenty... if you can get it serviced of course. But for $26 what have you got to lose for someone just starting out.

By the same token I know people who have been put off something by crappy gear and figure that if this is as good as it gets they want no part of it. So if it's going to be used for a few weekends here and there to carry some decenly light loads what's the harm. As long as it doesn't push him beyond the limits of what he can tolerate.

Would I buy it? nope. But then I knew what I wanted and that wasn't it.

Thanks WK, addy is on the way.

I've been good! Busy as hell. I was trying to hold up a long distance relationship for a couple years and it panned out. I've relocated to Evansville although I still have the place in Tell City too. We get married in October.

Still been doing lots of backpacking but mixing other stuff in too. Done some long caving trips and lots of adventure racing. We just finished our second 24-hour race this spring.

Hope all is well with you too. I had heard through the grapevine that there was a meltdown but don't know the details.

Congrats! I will get the pack out to you as soon as I can. Let me know if there is anything else you need as I have additional items I may be willing to part with.

Half of the regulars split and are over on lattaoutdoors.

In a nutshell what was the issue?

yeah nutshells can get in the way, but i've always found that once you get through the shell there's usually a nice little nugget of goodness hidden inside. But then again, every now and again you get one of those black shrivelled up duds
