Alright! laqtis it'll be great to see you!

Sounds (and looks) like an awesome plan so far.

that's right. we are not hiking the entire segment, just a piece of it. we can shorten it if we must or add a day if people don't like the miles. I don't know where the good camp sites are yet so all the numbers are rough right now.

Okay. Well, I'll keep an eye on the trip. I do have to schedule the Rockford meeting in Ocotober (I'll be there the entire week, regardless), so if I can work it out to be there, I will.

I may have to withdraw from this trip.
Lizs has made a point of ignoring my 'ride' suggestion. My feelings are so hurt. ;-)

ss, if I go, I can prolly pick you up....how tall are you again? you might have to scrunch up to fit in my car but...if my hubby can do it, you can do it.

Same here Stove, except you wouldn't have to scrunch up. I think it's a much longer drive from Detroit (about 12 hours I believe) than it is from Chicago though. You would get to see most of Michigan though and tickets might cost a bit less into DTW. You would also have to listen to Birch talk non-stop but that's usually pretty entertaining (in a good way).
I imagine that if you can get yourself up to this part of the country someone will get you up to the Hills. Maybe not anyone as nice as Lizs but it beats sitting at the airport crying. ;)

flights into and out of ORD are usually pretty cheap ss. strongly consider taking one of us midwestern folk up on the offer of a ride. you are welcome to crash at my place if you need to overnight in chicagoland... i live 20 mins from the airport. i'll chain the rottie. spirit coyote knows the couch is comfy. hehe.

I'll work out some good directions with prosecutor, mata. It sure would be great to see you again. Looking at the map last night I was thinking of posting how to get into camp. There look to be a lot of options.

MataHariHiker, this trip is ready made for slack packing. The first night is 2 miles from a large parking spot. The second night is no more than 1.5 miles from parking. The third night is less than 2 miles from where FR 326 crosses the trail off Old M-64 if you don't mind parking on a road.

This should be a great opportunity to do some sprinting - can't wait. Looks like way may have a great turn out. I was really looking at getting up to the Trap Hills sometime this year.... and now I have a reason why. Look forward to seeing everyone in October if we don't happen to cross paths before then.

Thanks for the info Prosecutor, if I can't make the trip maybe I'll just come visit camp since it's really close to me.

I was suppose to do a snowshoe trip there, but it was the weekend of the deep freeze and high winds.

I do plan to hike it this year, so we'll just have to see how things work out. I bet fall would be amazing there.

if i had one wish to ask of matt it would be to change the title of this thread to "Trap Hills, Michigan UP, 2007"... I snagged an extra "p" when I created the thread (I got it right on the trip page).

I'm still going to watch this trip, but I probably won't be able to make it now. Still haven't confirmed when I'll be doing my audits in Rockford, IL yet.

But, with a close friend now on the AT and me picking him up in ME between Aug and Sept, I don't know that I'm going to be able to squeeze anymore extra time off.

Like I said, I'll keep myself as a maybe and continue to watch as things develope.

We just got back from hiking part of this route.

We started 35 miles east from Old Victoria, and were to continue on hiking from Old Victoria to FR 326, But......the first 35 miles had many blow downs(at least 100) and the trail was hard to follow in some spots.
This slowed our pace to approx. 1.2-1.5 mph in many places? Which ended up putting us a 1/2 day behind in the hike, and left us a little worn-out too.

We decided to drive over to the Norwich Rd.TH and finished the hike from here, cutting off, approx. 15 miles or so.
We ended up hiking 52 miles, instead of the planned 65 miles.

Great hike, the climb from the Soo Line, west, is a butt-kicker.

I would suggest you leave a resupply/bail vehicle at Norwich Rd, which is approx. at mid-point for the hike.

I may be in for this hike, but only for the section we missed, from Old Victoria to Norwich road.
We could leave my vehicle at Norwich rd. for your resupply and for any that decide, that they can't go on, which in this case, I could drive them back to their cars?

Also, Its 33.8 miles from Old Victoria to M-64, at least this was how the trail signs were marked.

Its 30 miles from Old Victoria to FR. 326, then another 3.8 miles further west to M-64, 33.8 miles?

My numbers come from Eric Hansen's book. I would not claim they could not me off 2.5 miles on this route but I will say that for the most part his hike descriptions are right on. If there is a discrepancy I am sure he would like to know about it.

We would love to have you join us in any capacity, ncthiker.

Thank you for offering a resupply vehicle at Norwich Rd to those that would wish to use it. It's not that long of a hike but it's nice for people to have the option.

I'm just telling you what the trail signs stated the mileage was, and I know the sign could be wrong, but, I doubt it, as the mileage adds up to be the same, going from my NCT maps.

Also, you never know, who might become injured or not be the the best of shape, and want to end the trip a little early?

I would need someone to follow me to Norwich rd. then we could take Victoria rd. over which is a quicker drive.

I hear you. I'll check the numbers and if they are off I'll send Eric an email. No worries. I could have misunderstood/miscopied the data from his book as well I guess.
