Ok, I see where the difference in our mileage totals are coming from?

You have the mileage figured from the Victoria Rd. trail crossing, which is southwest from the Town-site parking area.

I wasn't aware that there was any other parking in this area, but I see where it looks the trail goes by a boat launch and maybe there is also parking for the Victoria Loop trail further west from the Town-site?

Otherwise, if you do start at the Old Victoria town-site and end at M-64, not Old-64, then according to Doug Welker, its 33.5 miles total.

That's good to know. Thanks for looking into this. I look forward to meeting you in person, even for a segment of this trip.

I may or may not go up earlier, possibly either Oct. 5th or the 12th. Either of these 2 weekends should be at peak color.

Otherwise, I will join this hike, if I don't go with the earlier dates?

Also be advised that there are limited camp-sites up on the bluff's and overlooks, so you will probably need to split into 2 or more groups and spread the camp-sites apart a bit?

Yeah, prosecutor mentioned this. If it's a typical TT trip then 1/2 that sign up will show up. Haha! Hope you can make it. It would be good to finally meet you.

Any reason that you're making the trip for the later part of October?

I'd like to meet and hike with many of you as well.

If I went on your trip, I would need someone to meet me at Norwich Rd., then drive me over to Old Victoria, where you plan to start, correct?

But, I see where you plan to do your car shuttle and start hiking on Friday as well. I wouldn't probably be up there, until 4:00-5:00pm Friday night, So, I might have to nix this trip then?

I would only hike 7-10 miles on Sat. camp Sat. night, then finish at Norwich Rd.

It's your call really. I don't know how far it is from Norwich Rd to Old Victoria. I am sure we can work something out. Let us know what you think will work and we'll see what we can do.

The date was chosen to work with the schedules of several people that first pulled the hike together. Then the trip was made public and anyone that wanted to join was welcome.

I didn't expect such a large group but this will make the trip special and a lot of fun. I sure hope you can make it, ncthiker.

wow... 22 people with 11 tenative. this is going to be a fun trip.

pros, do you think there is parking for this many cars near the proposed start in Old Victoria?

I guess we could stage all the cars at the parking area at the END of the hike like we did at the Mammoth Cave buttkicker this year. That worked out VERY well in my opinion.

It'd be 23, Jim, if I had any vacation left. I have been wanting to hike in the UP since I started bp'ing. You know, the drive would be shorter if somebody hadn't gone and put that dam lake in the way.

I'm not getting any chances to use up vacation days, so it looks like I'll have a few left to come on up and do this trip.

JS,

I've posted a trip the weekend of Oct. 6th, if no others sign on for my trip, then I will possibly join you?

As for parking at the Old Victoria Townsite, there is a huge grass parking area that could handle quite a few cars , as well as parking directly in front of the townsite.(paved)

A bigger issue will be where you'll all camp each night, you'll probably need to form 3 seperate groups, and the fastest group, will end up with the best camp-sites?

The high overlooks have limited camp-spots, but you can hike a very short distance away, find a site, and still be close enough to be able to hike back to and eat a meal, or watch a sunrise/sunset up high.

it will all be good once we are there... you can over-plan these things.

dispersing at camp is always a good idea, esp if there are loud snoring people in the group... lol! we'll have a nice fire and good conversation, that's for sure.

NCThiker,
I wrote to you on "the otherside" that I could do the weekend before, or after the 6th. Maybe going on this trip would take care those last few miles. I wish I could have done it with you, it would have been perfect mileage ; )

I have already done the section from Norwich Rd. west to F.R.-326.

But, we had to skip the section that I'm now planning to hike, as the 35 miles we did, before we reached old Victoria, was very rough, with 200 or more trees across the trail.

We had intended to hike the entire, 65 miles from the South Laird rd,west TH to F.R.-326, but we fell a half day behind and were fairly wasted by the time we reached Old Victoria.

This is one reason that I want to go back, so, I can hike the section we skipped. Plus the Fall color will be a big plus as well.

yeah, I remember reading your trail report about all the trees you had to climb over.
graska

Its was a harder hike, with the trail conditions as they where, than the section we hiked through the Trap Hills.

For the first 35 miles of the hike, we basically had to hike from 8:30am to 7:30pm, just to make our daily mileage.

Hammocks are the way to go in the Trapps..flat areas are tiny and rare...at least from Gleason Falls to Norwich Road...you can't camp in Whiskey Hollow...

Yes, I'm aware that there are no camping zones(private property) along, this section of the NCT.
The sections are marked in red on the map.(Red zones, mean no camping)

We needin a bear proof container for this here trip, or the simple hang technique will do?

I know I know....I just put salt in the wound now don't I? Bear proof containers? Can't we just suspend things from trees? That's what we did in the Smokies? Are we keeping our food from bears or Yoopers. If there isn't beer and/or pork rinds in your pack...you should be free of the Yoopers.

I am guessing we will just hang Patty. We did this last year while on our NCT hike up in WI.

Hanging your food should be enough.

Bear hunting will be going on until October 26th, and you might hear distance shots once or twice during the day, and perhaps a poacher at night. Plan on wearing a blaze orange hat for safety, and do not stumble around at night without a flashlight.

I was up there Monday! WOW, what a beautiful area! I explored old Victoria, hiked to the overlook and up Norwich bluff. Which was killer in the 90 degree temps, but well worth it when I saw the view. Now I'm really looking forward to doing the Fall hike with NCThiker, I don't know that I could handle the miles you're doing Jimmysan... but you'll love it I'm sure!
