You might want to check current state regulations....some streams will be closed to trout fishing this time of year.

“last year was beautiful... really cool during the day and cold at night. i cut a TON of firewood on the second night... slept in my bivy with a log to my back so the wind wouldn't be so tough to bear. i fed that fire every few hours and had the best nights sleep i ever had in the backcountry. i would wake up, stoke the fire, and fall asleep staring at the starts through the trees... until the clouds came in later that night. i still have great memories of that night and the contrast of the cold night air on one side and the warm fire on the other is a memory i'll enjoy for a long time. that was a great trip and that was only one of the many reasons it was great.”

hang your food if you are concerned. that is good enough. these bears are pretty heavily hunted and scared of people.

i also big-time second what mata said about wolves. i WISH i could see one in the wild. for years i have seen their signs and heard them but never once have i seen one. these are very cunning and shy animals, but also very curious. while it's not impossible to see one i would consider an encounter with a wolf (or a pack!) to be a stoke of good fortune.”

“Thanks for the update, it sounds like this will be similar to the Black Forest trial in Pennsylvania. There were bears there too, but they had been hunted for years and were scared of hikers overall. We did see lots of sign though. I guess I will just skip the canister, unless anyone else is brining one.

backpacking in virginia this weekend. man, am i busting out or what. i was going to go climbing but i couldn't get a partner and didn't want to solo climb (for some reason). so i opted to backpack. i'll get in a solid weekend... good break-in for the NCT trip.

i might be swinging back into the backpacking world after a diversion into climbing. it's all crash bang's fault, of course.”
