“Hey suthern rednecks, are we gonna get together in florida next year on the FT again? :)” 9:45:37 AM 2/23/07 “I dunno SC. I'm not sure that I will be planning anything on the FT for the foreseeable future. Lots of stuff here in NC for me to explore.” 9:51:53 AM 2/23/07 “Jonesin' for some sunshine SC?” 9:53:36 AM 2/23/07 “suthern rednecks do not backpack. ;-)” 9:54:49 AM 2/23/07 “:( Dang it, I really wanna hike in Florida again! Well...I'll have to make my own trip then....” 9:56:09 AM 2/23/07 “Hey, anyone kknow how long a thru hike of the FT might take?” 10:15:45 AM 2/23/07 “Based on your speed during the Deam trip, I would say 3-4 years. ;-)” 10:22:27 AM 2/23/07 “OUCH!” 10:23:53 AM 2/23/07 “:( oh, that hurt! The importnat thing is that I made it :) last edited: 2/23/07 10:29:07 AM” 10:26:42 AM 2/23/07 “No cookies for Stovie” 10:29:15 AM 2/23/07 “Hee hee hee.....” 10:29:45 AM 2/23/07 “seriously...anybody know? is it doable in two weeks?” 10:31:29 AM 2/23/07 “If you can do 100 miles a day for 14 days. Not kidding, the trail is 1400 miles long. http://www.floridatrail.org” 10:35:34 AM 2/23/07 “I'll just have to eat my wheeties... Well, i guess I'll jsut have to do it in sections then ;)” 10:39:51 AM 2/23/07 “Try about 3.5 to 4 months. *edit* For the whole thing that is. last edited: 2/23/07 10:46:22 AM” 10:43:57 AM 2/23/07 “lol... I didnt realize it was taht long :)” 10:55:28 AM 2/23/07 “wasn't there a guy a couple years back that did the FL trail and then connected to the AT and went all the way from the Key's up to Maine?” 10:57:29 AM 2/23/07 “Yeah, there is a fair number of folks that do that. Personally, I am not interested in that much roadwalking.” 11:10:41 AM 2/23/07 “I just feel the need for some sand in my shoes...” 11:13:51 AM 2/23/07 Detour “The completed trail sections total much less than 1,400 miles. Looking at a map I would guess that about half the trail is not yet completed. And some sections are restricted to members of the FTA. last edited: 2/23/07 11:48:06 AM” 11:45:30 AM 2/23/07 “How can the FTA restrict use? Do they own the trail? Just curious...” 11:50:56 AM 2/23/07 “It is 1400 miles to walk the trail and yes that does include a pretty large amount of road walking around unfinished sections or sections where there is no way to build a trail. Sass they don;t own the trail. The trail travels over private or restricted property in several spots. In order to secure right of way for a continuous trail the FTA had to negotiate that only FTA members would have access. last edited: 2/23/07 12:00:42 PM” 11:59:40 AM 2/23/07 “Ever since HumanPackMule moved, we haven’t really had an organizer. I’ve been content to sit in the background and have only attended two of the Florida trips although it’s right in my backyard. I can start research on some trips and run it by you folks if you’re interested. The Florida Trail Association is right here in Gainesville and it’s about time I updated my Florida Trail maps anyway. Florida really is a great place to hike in the middle of winter. I’m going to St. Augustine this weekend. It’s supposed to be 75 and sunny tomorrow. It's a glorious day today.” 12:02:15 PM 2/23/07 “Sorry 'bout that. Bums me out that last year was a non-starter.” 12:04:01 PM 2/23/07 “thanks for the answer hpm.” 12:04:45 PM 2/23/07 “After 9-11 the newly built Eglin AFB section in the panhandle got re-routed to a state highway for like 13 miles and the Camp Blanding section came with a free Humvee ride to the other side.” 12:09:58 PM 2/23/07 “surfergirl and i would be interested....” 1:23:57 PM 2/23/07 “It's funny to see all the orange, rectangular blazes along US 1 through the Keys. That's like, not sure - 150 miles? I wouldn't consider the Key West-->Katadin hike, either. It's now possible to extend an AT hike alll the way to Talladega NF, AL, tho. The Benton Mckaye continues from near Springer to the Cohutta Wilderness - prolly 50 miles. The BM now connects with the GA section of Pinhotti @ Cohutta. It's prolly another 200 miles to the terminus of Pinhoti. That's another 250 miles if the AT didn't quite scratch one's itch...” 1:32:09 PM 2/23/07
