clear skies all day in the Great Divide Basin.
The moon was not red, but the earth's shadow did cover a small portion of the moons upper right side.
I shot a few photographs and will post images shortly after the film is processed.

The lower left edge of the moon shone though the clouds when the sunlight hit it ---- so we got to see part of it, when it got high enough.

Cool pix!

Cool shots!

Dryfoot and I snowshoed as dusk went to full darkness. Fabulous sunset! We were at a point where we watched the eclipsing moon come up. Trees to that direction were cluttering the view, but we could see the crescent and it was reddish.

Going back, the soon-full moon was fun! I got a fairly nice shot of that -- and the snow shoe tracks -- when I could plant my camera on a post, open up to 15" and put on self-timer.

I was out in the Mojave yesterday - I watched the moon rise - it was big and bright, but certainly not red

Well, mark your calendars for the next one in August (28th)... Unfortunately the West-Coasters are screwed again for that one!

This will be like a mirror opposite of the one just passed: before dawn the Full Moon will go red and then set as the Sun rises. One for the early-birds ---

I went outside to look, but we had too much cloud cover to see it. I hope it's clear out for the next one.

I watched out our windows at the appointed hour, but the clouds were too thick. I'll catch the next one, I'm usually out of the house before dawn.

I'm normally a late riser, too, but to beat the traffic I'm up early during the week. Seems to be easier the older I get, but still not something I would choose if I were independently wealthy... Aug 28th is a Tuesday so I should be up for it.

Yep, but if you set up a trip out into the deep dark wilderness, and make it a point of seeing it, it's easier to do. Sounds like a good time to try to use up our tickets west.

BTW, things are looking good for the Perseid meteor shower about two weeks earlier (Sunday night, August 12-13th)... New Moon is that night on the 12th!

With the Moon completely out of the way, the only thing left to worry about will be... THE CLOUDS!

IMO Calendar for 2007

note:
ZHR = Zenithal Hourly Rate. This year for the Perseids you should be able to see about 100/hr from a reasonably dark site. We're over a week past the maximum of the Delta Leonids right now... with a whopping ZHR of TWO.

uh-oh --- bad flashback, LOL

(stop me if you've heard me say this 15 times before...)

I've been to the Grand Canyon twice now. Once in late August and once over New Years, and I'll take the ice on the rim Any Day! *G*

That Late August thing... (yikes)... It was about 85° on the South Rim and 107° at Phantom Ranch. The sneaky part was that Dry Heat you've heard so much about. It didn't feel that hot so the hyperthermia snuck up on us... not good.

If you do the Canyon in August, listen to Sarabelle and Bee Keerful. Consider hiking at night!

(hey, the Leonid meteors peak on Nov 18th -- it'll be nice and cool by then, VBG!)

Well, I did the canyon in August once. It was my very first trip ever, I was 15. It was 112° at Phantom Ranch. Don't tell Birch about how hot it gets, he won't want to go.

no... not a word --- LOL

I've wondered, since 'The Hell Trip,' that perhaps wearing something like cotten might actually be a Good Thing when it's 110 frickin' degrees, to hold the perspiration next to the skin longer for more evaporative cooling.

I have yet to test this hypothesis.

I thought about running the idea by MaryPhyl or 'Hnak of the Canyon' to see what they might think... or AWOL Biz. Pathman lived in New Mexico for quite a while, I think. Desert Dweller over on the Dark Side is an Arizona boy... Who else is out there these days? I'm drawing a blank. Did Tango ever make good on her threat to escape to the Southwest?

I almost forgot... The planet is about another degree hotter due to Global Climate Change since you were there last, so watch out for that! ;-)

I'm ready for a good meteor shower, I didn't make it outside this past November.

Isn't the traditional clothing of the desert nations usually cotton?

Desert wear under an eclipse?
Cotton is ok in the heat, but be careful if it is still damp when the sun goes down. I'd still go with a wicking T shirt, a long sleeve sun shirt MH canyon shirt that breathes and blocks sun. A cotton sun hat is nice. You can soak if you pass water and feels nice. Same with a bandana. Put it around your neck. Cool! Shade breaks work too. DRINK WATER!

Tango is in AZ, btw.

I must confess, I had lust in my heart for a soaking wet cotten t-shirt when we got toward the bottom of the Inner Canyon back in '91 [VBG] We did more than a couple of dumb things on that trip... We read everything we could get our hands on, but we didn't have access to the Internet! ;-)

That Desert Rhat Hat was a godsend, though (alas, Sequel, that marvelous yet extinct outdoor clothing company)

(how time flies!)

Lotsa testosterone on that trip. You know how some people have to be "In Charge" and that sort of thing, VBG. Nah --- It wasn't really that bad. There was a bit of sniping afterwards, online.... I don't recall how that started.

yes, MP isn't far from the Canyon, I think. I laid low for a while, internet-wise, and everyone has moved all around, *G*
