This will teach me to go back to monthly investments and dollar cost averaging.” 6:35:13 PM 2/27/07 “I hope it doesn't rebound before I put my yearly contribution in on 4/15. I guess that's selfish. OTOH, it's been fun watching the balance rise over the last few months.” 7:15:12 PM 2/27/07 “G said something to me tonight that "they" (the feds?) want to limit the profit you can make on the stock market. Not sure what that means, exactly, but isn't the market there for folks to gamble and make it big if they so chose?” 8:02:29 PM 2/27/07 “Never heard the rumor of the Feds limiting profits (except for capital gains taxes), but the market does have limits to how far it can fall in one day (trading will stop). This market has been ripe for a correction - the DJ Index has climbed from 10,500 to 12,700 since last July. There have also been many indicators of an impending change - slowing housing market, subprime lending market crapping out, consumer spending has slowed, and rumors of foreign investment withdrawl limitations being mulled by the Chinese govt. The near future should be interesting.” 8:50:26 PM 2/27/07 “I've also been suprised how this market sustained itself through the housing slow down and high personal debt. There's a alot of the once popular variable rate mortgages out there and I know people are feeling the pinch once the lock is gone. It should be interesting to see where this goes. I'd love to see a correction to bring P/E's to a more reasonable level. All these years, I'm still a buy and hold strategist myself. Shakeouts work for me.” 2:36:48 AM 2/28/07 “http://www.kstp.com/article/stories/S33513.shtml?cat=1 Verrrrry interesting. It was all caused by a computer glitch?” 2:42:15 PM 2/28/07 “At least now I can afford some of the stock I've been wanting to buy!” 3:05:29 PM 2/28/07 “On Monday, Greenspan muttered something about the possibility of a recession by year's end. Within hours, the Chinese stock market (which is very dependent on exports to the US) tanked, followed by a dip in the US market. Market manipulation 101.” 3:08:10 PM 2/28/07 “Here we go again!” 8:44:07 AM 3/01/07 “It seems that the glitch was a processing bottleneck (too few resources?) in the system and orders backed up... then the results of a great number of valid transactions appeared at once and scared the crap out of people. Just musing aloud --- Since departing the Fed, Greenspan's holdings are no longer in a blind trust.” 8:55:01 AM 3/01/07 “Those couple a bucks missed by selling a bit early sure taste good in my pipe now. When even gold follows stocks down - well, you figure that one out. If reduced cap gain rates help grow the economy, why then, only raise interest rates to put on the brakes? Oh , that's right, the rich be lenders, Ah?” 9:06:51 AM 3/01/07 Salebored “When even gold follows stocks down - well, you figure that one out. This is contrary to my way of thinking also. Could it be that the big funds companies are just unwinding a percentage of all their holdings and those holding include gold mining stocks? I know the central and bullion banks have been fighting the price of gold but sooner or later gold and gold mining is going to de-couple from the stock market. I'm looking to make money off of it and fearing what is going to happen to the dollar at the same time.” 9:22:02 AM 3/01/07 “It certainly makes one think that the inflation fight may have 'Ben' a bit over done. Like I said above, lower rates on interest and cap gains were the flag of the free market group, but when a little inflation appears they never use both as brakes to slow down the train. Of course, these things can only moderate a correction when three digit gains have been made in foreign markets. gold is used in industry more and more , but it's old safety function id deminishing.” 9:33:25 AM 3/01/07 Salebored “gold is used in industry more and more , but it's old safety function id deminishing. I don't see eye to eye on that. I'm sure the feds, the central bankers, and the Wall St. crowd want gold to go away but I don't think the Russians, Chinese, Indians, or anyone else that has experienced a fiat currency collapse would agree. I'm not trying to diss anyone but those who think our currency is safe have their heads in the sand.” 10:34:10 AM 3/01/07 “ped - you should be hoping that your check was invested when the market was down (buy low), so maybe you were worrying for nothing?” 11:02:13 AM 3/01/07 “Oh, don't get me wrong, gold is still an investment like anything thing else, but it's something that can't be relied on as a fix all as many has thought of it in the past.” 11:28:58 AM 3/01/07 “I can agree with that. It will certainly never be a currency again. But it could come to past that the currency that will eventually replace the petrodollar has to be backed with gold.” 11:46:18 AM 3/01/07 “What, no cornwhiskeydollar will follow?” 1:52:55 PM 3/01/07 “Greeneggnspam in conjunction with the liberal media killed the stock market-get um Larry Kudlowlife.” 4:22:41 PM 3/01/07 “now is the time to BUY. I am buying as of yesterday and today.” 4:33:49 PM 3/01/07 “I'd like to thank any of you that supported my short covering with your stops and stop limits over the last three days.” 2:16:02 PM 3/02/07 “Gold still falling.” 8:36:05 AM 3/05/07 “LOL..>I love listening to the EXPERTS on the STOCK MARKET I have heard disaster predicted since 1993 and it KEEPS going up. Remember in 1980 in the midst of the post Cahtuh mailaise the best selling economic books were economic "HOW TO SURVIVE the RECESSION" books. 5 years later at the start of the greatest Peace Time period of Growth in World History the top selling books were..."How to survive the coming economic debacle"” 8:42:05 AM 3/05/07 “aaahhh....the bears love to stir the pot....but what really irks them is the fact that there's ALWAYS a bull market some where....he he....i'm a Bull Hunter! Lets go get us a nice fat one!” 9:27:51 AM 3/05/07 “Like lambs being led to the slaughter.” 10:58:48 AM 3/05/07 “You have a point XL. Reminds me of the joke about the expert who predicted 12 out of the last 5 recessions.” 11:22:22 AM 3/05/07 “Arggggggg. The dow sucked today. But it's a good for me to invest in a utility stock that I have been tracking.” 3:22:41 PM 6/07/07 “What is going on here? Hedge fund woes, market down Earnings better than expected, market up Credit woes lessening, market up Hedge fund woes again, market down Is someone out there playing games with us or what? Am I just underexperienced or is the market making outlandish swings every time a piece of news comes out? The only stock I own outside of a fund is PG and it is kickin butt this week. But the way things are going, $4.50 a share up could turn into a $4.50 down in a matter of hours.” 11:01:23 AM 8/09/07 “sub-prime woes are spooking investors today and a French bank had to go and freeze 3 funds that invest in the sub-prime mortgage market.... PG is a nice stock...don't give in, its a long play....up today about $1.30....we bought some about 2 months ago for my 11 year old daughter.....” 11:12:27 AM 8/09/07 “Lately, I think it's just plain fear. We had a great day yesterday. Then some news out of Europe this morning, some poor earnings reports, investors got jittery, and the market tanked. Yeah, you're right, the swings have been nuts lately. I am suprised day traders aren't jumping out the windows on Wall Street. I invest long so the volatility doesn't hurt so much.” 11:13:54 AM 8/09/07 “My basis is about $.30 per share. I am definitely holding on. It was a gift that was previously a gift to the person who gave it to me.” 11:14:03 AM 8/09/07 “$.30 per share! What the heck are you worried about!! LOL. Hold on to that baby. Maybe it will split again. The dividend is nice too.” 11:20:54 AM 8/09/07 “Creek....I was thinking the same thing...LOL...Last I saw, the so-called expert analysts are looking for it to hit $72.87 as a 1yr estimate...” 11:25:28 AM 8/09/07 “hehe, I'm not worried about anything. I don't plan to sell it any time soon, if ever. It's kind of like my security blanket. I'd feel naked knowing it was no longer there. Plus, I'd be writing a big check to the IRS if I ever decided to switch it out. Even though I don't plan to realize it, it's still nice to see it finally making some kind of move.” 11:35:07 AM 8/09/07 “Shoot, maybe I should buy some on one of the down days. But I just paid college tuition for two kids and I am out of moolah right now.” 11:39:36 AM 8/09/07 ductape “Since this was a gift of stock a couple of times over, your stock basis might not be that low. I don't know a lot about this, but I believe the cost basis depends upon how the market value compares to to the donor's cost basis. I'm not sure which donor's cost basis you would use in this case. Probably the one that gave you the stock. Anyway, if you haven't done so already, I suggest that you pull together gift dates and market values and keep that information with the stock. It can be really hard to find that information as time passes and memories lapse. When you do sell the stock, you could end up paying more in capital gains that necessary if you don't have a good record.” 11:55:33 AM 8/09/07 “I'm an accountant and I still have a hard time with basis. Anyhow, I figured it out a while back and discontinued my automatic dividend reinvestment to help keep it simple. What a mess that was trying to figure out dividend dates and reinvestment prices. The market price and donor's basis will really only come into play if the donor gifts the stock at a loss. Usually the receiver will take the giftor's basis. For example, if I was to give you a gift of appreciated stock, your basis would be my basis. This ensures that taxes are paid by someone on the gain. If I give you stock that I was carrying a loss on, your basis would be the market price, not my basis. This ensures that I would not be able to gift you my tax loss. *The above statement was written off the top of my head and may be inaccurate, though at the time of posting I believe it to be true. last edited: 8/09/07 12:35:56 PM” 12:33:20 PM 8/09/07 “Ahhhh, okay, now I get it. Cool. That makes sense now. I had no idea you were an accountant! I used to research the cost basis of really old railroad stock going back a hundred years or more. Some of the railroads had gone into federal receivership which made the stock worthless, but some was worth a nice bundle due to mergers and stock splits over the years. I am not an accountant, but I play one on tv.” 12:43:31 PM 8/09/07 “What the hell is happening to the blue chips today?” 12:18:38 PM 8/30/07 “they're getting covered in chilli and cheese and baked to a nice golden brown” 12:29:39 PM 8/30/07 “lol, that's the spirit thrifty!” 12:30:50 PM 8/30/07 “our company came out with a second quarter loss on top of a down grading by AM Best...our stock's in the tank” 12:32:37 PM 8/30/07 “If the long term forecast is good, then it might be a good time to buy! There's a lot of good economic news out there today. I guess the credit problems are still making the market nervous.” 12:39:04 PM 8/30/07 “The market's trying to tell Uncle Ben Bernanke what to do. The real banditos can't survive without cheap money. The rich get pissed and take their money home to some other country. In the dips buy some stock in the winner of the drug war(Mexico). If you have anymore left , buy some stock in the winner of the welfare war--YAW! Mexico.” 12:48:38 PM 8/30/07 6:50:29 AM 8/31/07 “GOOG $61.24 below 52high Stovie!” 10:16:43 AM 11/26/07 “My retirement account is tanking.” 10:24:36 AM 11/26/07 “Tanking???? Yeah right, all the way back to August levels. This is a sale.” 10:39:34 AM 11/26/07 “Gotta look long term on your investments or the current market volatility will make you nuts. I've moved some 401K moolah over to a stable interest fund just to be safe. I don't think the market jitters are over yet.” 10:48:19 AM 11/26/07 “ "I don't think the market jitters are over yet.” Post when you think we are at bottom. IMO the S&P index won't go much below 1400, near term. It is at 1430 as I type.” 10:52:32 AM 11/26/07
