Khatru is to the Vet's

“Please send out positive energy to him. He has developed some sort of non-cancerous leisons on his lungs which causes him to kak much too much for a dog of his age. He is receiving a trachial wash this morning and then will be on something called panicure for 10 days. If this works, all is good in my universe. If not, we go to more drastic measures and take him to Memphis for CT work on his internals. Anyway, I hope that won't be the case.

I'm sure there will be many notes of prayer and support ensuing. I appreciate all the thoughts and vibes. Thank you. He'll be needing it.

He's resting now...I don't think he likes feeling icky...like me, he's not a very good sick person. We're both resting and going to take it easy this weekend and do lots of energy work through Reiki and meditation.

He was really good around 2 cats this weekend...he didn't chase them at all. these cats belong to the one who I call my love, so, it was a good thing that he got along with them. Shane had a similar sounding problem last spring and we got it cleared up. I can closely empathize with your feelings right now because I've never seen a dog as sick as he was. Sounds like your big guy is a fighter too.”

“We went to the Irish this weekend to backpack. We did the 7.1 mile leg, both directions. He's resting now...me too. Saturday I kept him on the leash the entire day. Today, I let him off to be the dog he has been for the past 7.5 years. He is such an excellent dog. We were accompanied by the newest member of our family, my girlfriend and love. This weekend fulfilled everything that I had been dreaming of for the past 8 years and to have my dog sick now, when everything else is turning out so beautifully, is a challenge. The new lesson from the Universe is "acceptance". I just finished "Patience" and before that "foregiveness and compassion". If this was to be my last backpacking trip with Khatru, we went to the place we love the most, to our favorite camp site on the river, with the woman who I have been waiting a lifetime to meet. I'd say then, that this can't be all bad.

We head to memphis next week to begin the process of finding out how to make him well. and if we can't, we're going to plan on living our lives the way we always have, and if he goes, he'll go living the life that he has been living with me...on the trail and on the river. He's a trail and river dog, and that's what he's always going to be and to die doing that which we love, is an honor.

“I haven't heard from the memphis vet yet. I'm trying to set up something for the first of April. I have 2 weeks of travel to attend to starting next tuesday, so 4-1 will be my first opportunity to get him to memphis.

We went backpacking this past weekend, and I kept him on the leash on saturday, hiking in. I didn't enjoy it and neither did he. When we got to camp, he was ok and I let him wander around our place. he knows this site intimately. we were with Nannette...her first backpacking trip with us. It was perfect. campfire, soup, dinner, girlscout cookies...slow dancing next to the fire...couldn't have asked for anything more, other than to not let this be Khatru's last backpacking trip. Sunday, even more perfect...I let Khatru off the leash to hike out. He and I really enjoyed ourselves and he got to be the trail dog he knows how to be. There was a moment where he stopped in the trail and turned to look at me and I could hear his thoughts saying "thank you daddy, I love being a dog". I stumbled in my steps and there was Nannette to hold me up from falling on my face. whew...it was a rocky moment and I totally lost it thinking that this was our first and possible last trip as a family. Nannette may possibly never get to see him as the river dog that he is, but at least she got to see him as the trail dog that he is. I'm blessed to have him in my life, and more blessed to have Nannette too, with us.

More details later as they come. right now, there is no change and no real medical news. We remain hopeful turning to faith and trusting that the Universe will turn all this into what it needs to be. Grace, Love, Patience, Acceptance, Compassion, Foregivess...lessons of the moment. worse than college.
