Osprey Men's Atmos 65 PackView Messages“any one have any experience with this pack. It looks like you lose a lot of space because of the way the frame is shaped. ”12:20:33 PM 3/02/07 “I have the Atmos 50 which has the same general shape. I think you do lose some space, but the comfort because of configuration and ventilation was a great tradeoff. It's the pack I used on my thruhike. I've been thinking about this same pack for 500 miles on the CDT this summer. Buy it and let me know:)” 12:35:33 PM 3/02/07 “I used the 50 on the A.T. and L.T. - no problems at all with space. Looks are definitely deceiving on this pack. I would add though that I don't use a bladder with it, which could take up some space. That said, a lot of people with the Atmos series packs put their bladder between the mesh and the pack. Love the Atmos.” 12:43:22 PM 3/02/07 “how much weight were either of you carrying in it?” 12:44:42 PM 3/02/07 “I started with 33 at Neel's Gap. Too much food. :) By the end of the LT, I was right around 27-28.” 1:04:04 PM 3/02/07 “I would leave town with 23-26 pounds, which includes food and water. Naturally the last day before town was the best because sometimes I would be at 10lbs or less. This could be done because I was seldom more than 3-4 days between towns. This summer on the CDT I'll need a bigger pack because it will be 7-8 days between stops. Hope this helps.” 1:06:45 PM 3/02/07 “Had to send mine back because my bear cannister would'nt fit. I really liked the pack, but wondered the long-term issue of the attachment between the shoulder strap and the (mesh) back panel.” 1:15:15 PM 3/02/07 “thanks all” 2:11:50 PM 3/02/07 “I love the atmos 50. I packed up to 35 lbs in it and it is still comfy. I love that pack. I think it is the ultimate weekender. I can't say anything for the 65, but if it's anywhere near as comfy as the 50, it'll be a great pack for sure!” 6:38:37 PM 3/02/07 “with my dividend, 20% off and a 50.00 gift card I can get it for 105.00. I will head to REI this weekend and check it out. I can see the concern about a bear cannister fitting in it. I just need an in-between pack that can carry more than my Trek but not weigh as much as my Forrester. I almost bought the REI UL60 but got talked out of it by an REI employee. They mentioned this pack and one by Gregory. Unfortunately I don't remember which one” 6:52:36 PM 3/02/07 “I just picked one up at REI. I cant wait to use it. Bear canister might be an issue. But it seems like a great pack.” 7:26:56 PM 3/02/07 “I was watching an Atmos 50 NWT on ebay. It sold for $60.00. I was gonna sniper bid at the last second then forgot about it. Stupid stupid stupid!!” 11:00:54 PM 3/02/07 “The 65 has a zipper opening and two buckles that allow you to drop a bladder in the space between the mesh and the front of the pack. Also I crammed the pack full and was able to get the bear cannister (Bearvault 400) horizontally using the top to hold it down. the top of the pack wraps around and holds the canister in place.” 1:14:23 PM 3/13/07 “I was at REI last Sat night and of course they didn't have it in stock so I ordered it from them. It will be almost 1.5 weeks before they get it in. At least I have a trip that weekend to try it out before my Ga thru hike” 3:15:45 PM 3/13/07 “I'll have a chance to put it to the test on the BFT in Pa. I'm gonna pack as if doing the JMT. I have really high hopes for the pack.” 3:24:10 PM 3/13/07 “I do to but if not back it goes to REI” 4:05:08 PM 3/13/07 “you'll love it ewker. i've been using a 50 for over a year now. i've used it for both trips donw into the canyon. i've had 45 lbs in it including food for 6 days, 2 liters of water, gear and climbing rope. i wouldn't carry any more than that in it. it is an extremely comfotable suspension system, but 45 lbs leaves your shoulders feeling it a little at the end of the day. 35 pounds in it and you won't find anything much more comfortable. note on the bladder space behind the mesh (access through the zipper inside the pack bag). i hung my bladder in there the first day of the canyon trip this year. it cut down on the ventilation considerably. if you can avoid it, don't hang your bladder in there.” 10:53:57 AM 3/14/07 “Ewker, what weight range is your norm? The Osprey Aether series is about a lb (or less) heavier with a far superior suspension and hip belt. Big difference in the carrying capacity between the two. I think there's only a $20 difference in price. Gregorys have a great suspension but are much heavier, into the 6-7 lb range.” 10:58:11 PM 3/14/07 “baume, thanks for the info on the one you have. SARguy, I have a Gregory that can carry a tank but like you said they weigh 6-7 lbs. I also have a GoLite Trek that weighs 2 lbs but it limited to 30 lbs even though I have pushed it to 35lbs. I can tell a difference when I do. The Atmos 65 is rated 35-50 lbs and for a few week long trips I have coming up I will be in the 35-40 lbs range..hoping I won't be but you never know. Also the Atmos 65 weighs 3 lbs 10 oz which I can live with” 11:16:12 PM 3/14/07 “I have had my Atmos 50 carry 40lbs already and it did it well. If it had just a little more padding in the rear of the hip belt where the suspension attaches it would be perfect.” 8:08:47 AM 3/15/07 “I used my Osprey Atmos 65 for the first time last weekend. The hardest thing was packing it due to the curved frame. I had been so use to where everthing went with in my old pack that I had to pack and repack to get items where they needed to be in this one. I wasn't carrying a lot of gear for an overnight trip but the pack felt great on my back. Not so sure the mesh part help keep me cool since I sweat like crazy anyway. The biggest test comes in a little over a week when I am out for 6 days” 9:27:35 AM 3/28/07 “I used Mine as well. I'm pleased as punch. I used a Sea to Summit waterproof bag for my clothes. Its slippery so it made it easier to stuff into the curved frame. Love the two huge outside pockets. And the fit was top notch.” 9:46:29 AM 3/28/07 “jackstraw, did you have any problems with the two side pockets. They seem really tight compared to the mesh pockets on other packs. I didn't have enough stuff to put anything in the 2 zippered back pockets. I did like the big pocket on the back. That material really stretches there but not on the sides.” 10:26:15 AM 3/28/07 “The side pockets were tight I used them for nalgenes. I put my shelter in one zip back pocket and pack cover, filter etc in other. You are right the big back pocket makes a great catchall pocket. It almost reminds me of the gregory g big pocket. I did carry a bear container and it carried well horizontaly. just pay attention that its cinched down correctly. I found out the hard way a few choice words and a 50 foot climb out of a ravine later. Lesson learned.” 10:45:03 AM 3/28/07 osprey atmos 65 “Everyone that has said they load 30+ pounds or more in an atmos and backpack with it on extended trips is full of it!! I have 2 osprey backs and love them, they usually fit me well, so i had great hope that the atmos would be my new light backpack for 32.lb loads on weekend trips. WRONG!!! First, I tried on the medium size with no weight in it. I have mediums in other osprey packs and the size felt like it would work, so the lady at REI and i loaded 28 pounds in it, and the week frame started folding in half and cause the Medium size pack to shrink in fit like a SMALL! So i tried on a large and loaded it with 32 lbs, (well below what all of you say you carry in it, and what oprey says), and it started to flex and become very uncomfy!!!! Why would anyone not by the Gregory Z55 as i ended up doing? its lighter, better padding (for longer trips with max loads) and is all around a better deal. I "was" a diehard osprey fan, but i think to many people on here are full of it, and they think all the gadgets are cool, like the mesh back panel, which is a very poor design! For those who have not seen the pack, the whole back of it is mesh with large voids, no lumbar pad at all!! basically its like having a taunt net around your back, so how is that going to support any weight for any time? Durabilty and stregth are in serious question. Dont let these urban hikers fool you! Go see for yourself. I am not making it up. I am a serious backpacker, And i know good equipment, and this product from OSPREY is the first time i have ever scene them make something that seems like it was made just for the simple fact it would be a good seller. In theory, at the store, this may seem like a great pack, but really think about taking this on the trail and what problems it will cause. Of course if you want to look cool at the climbing Gym, festivals, or day hikes, with about 20 lbs max in it. This is the pack for you. last edited: 4/14/07 10:33:34 PM” 10:25:46 PM 4/14/07 “So, like what are you trying to say? Don't beat around the bush, tell it to us straight!” 11:13:12 PM 4/14/07 “well ride151, if you can say i'm full of it for what i do, i guess i can say you're a whimp. if you think 32 lbs.is too much for this pack, i'm sorry for you. the fact is, i've used an atmos 50 for two trips into the canyon. one for 5 nights and one for 6 nights. carried everything i needed for the entire trip both times. and, as i stated prior, i wouldn't go above 45 lbs. because i felt it at the end of the day. buy your gregory if that's what works for you, but don't tell me i'm full of it because i do what i do. the fact is, i've done it, more than once, and will do it again when the need arises. take your skirt off you sissy b!tch. last edited: 4/14/07 11:38:55 PM” 11:38:33 PM 4/14/07 “I've had 35 lbs in my Atmos 50 and it felt as comfortable as it did with 25. I love it! I think it's the greatest pack ever. I know Crazypace feels that way about his Atmos. They make good climbing packs too! Jackstraw just got the 65 and had it on the 4 day Black Forest Trail tip the other week and I am sure he had atleast 40 lbs in it and he only said how much he loved the pack! I don't think I am full of it though. I go hiking way too much to be full of it.” 9:34:29 AM 4/15/07 “I just used the pack for a AT section hike. I was out for 6 days and started with 40 lbs. I didn't resupply so I had 7 days worth of food in the pack. The hardest thing is still learning how to pack it because of the curved frame. After 2 days on the trail I finally found a way to pack it. Great pack that will be used a lot. I have another 6-7 day trip in Aug and this pack will be taken” 9:53:24 AM 4/15/07 “some packs work better for different people, but I still say that Osprey makes awesome packs.” 10:25:45 AM 4/15/07 “The Gregory Z55 does look nice (in Blue), But didn't you rip your Gregory very easily on the ADK rocks ENS? I question their durability.” 12:08:12 PM 4/15/07 “I'm watching the boys in my troop put Gregory packs through the ringer and I haven't seen any tears yet. A few even have my Gregory Deva.” 12:10:03 PM 4/15/07 “I agree, Ospreys are awesome, I have the Aura 65 and have used it also on two trips into the Grand Canyon comfortably carrying up to 35 pounds, over that and my shoulders got sore (I had to carry 16 extra pounds of water one day and was glad it was only a few miles) But, I have wimpy shoulders with not much padding there. Other packs I've used and own are a Karrimor, two different Granite Gears, and an REI UL 60. They all have their place but I am thrilled I invested in an Osprey.” 12:33:55 PM 4/15/07 “"I don't think I am full of it though. I go hiking way too much to be full of it." EarthNsky 10:34:29 AM Hey-hey-hey!!!! And then there's CrazyPace.......hey-hey-hey!!!” 12:45:16 PM 4/15/07 “I'm sure neither of you boys have had your fill!” 12:52:27 PM 4/15/07 “ State of residence: Member since: 4/14/07 Other comments:" Who the hell are you? (upside duh head)” 1:21:25 PM 4/15/07 “By the way, I have the Atmos 50 and did most of my thruhike with it, generally carrying 23 to 26 lbs. In times I was above 30 there was a definite difference in shoulder stress, but it is doable. When I did carry above 30 lbs, I always packed my dress just in case I couldn't hack the weight. I had absolutely no problem with inordinate wear and tear, but then I tend to take care of my gear. It's me what gets abused (and then mostly on trail talk).” 1:25:18 PM 4/15/07 “Dat's why you so slap-happy?” 1:37:06 PM 4/15/07 “If R151 knew what the F#&* he was talking about he'd know the 50 has been around and thouroughly put through the ringer including the suspension. I knew of dozens of people who awaited this pack and know of only one who has complained.( R151). ENS is right. I was hauling about 37 lbs for about 50 miles and after the first day you forget you have it on. Oh and learn to spell! Thank you for allowing me to vent I feel better” 1:51:25 PM 4/15/07 atmos 65 “People are talking about wieght and padding on the shoulders with the atmos. You are not suppose to have much weight on your shoulders, especially enough to be a problem causing your shoulders to get tired. You people are taking this personally, i am just saying this pack will not carry more then about 25lbs. while keeping its form. And calling me names, lol, my my, how nice! I have had an osprey silhouette since 1995 and a Osprey scarab since 2000. I carry 60 lbs in my silhouette and it does not loose shape on the back, although the the pack, understandably starts to sag on the waist belt, due to years of use and at times heavy weight. I used it on 200 miles of the Mountains to sea trail last year. I cant imagine grabbing the atmos and putting 35 lbs in it. "LEARN TO SPELL" - jackstraw haha, you dumbass you cant spell either, its "thoroughly" !!! what a dumbaass, if i was going to talk #&%!$ about spelling, i would at least check my spelling first. Nimblefoot, thanks for being honest. And "i am a whimp if i think 32lbs is to much for this pack"???? what the hell, i didnt say, to much weight for me, but, yes to much for THIS PACK! last edited: 4/15/07 2:20:55 PM” 2:19:33 PM 4/15/07 “You gonna take that crap, Jockstrap?” 2:26:29 PM 4/15/07 “By- alongside or near Buy- purchase taut- strung tight Taunt- To reproach in a mocking, insulting, or contemptuous manner. hehe....” 5:14:57 PM 4/15/07 “My Atmos is very comfortable, and I prefer to use it over my Crescent, but I try to keep the weight below 30 pounds when using the Atmos. A actually like the mesh backplane.” 5:33:04 PM 4/15/07 “for what it's worth, I've been looking at the Gregory Z55 and am going to get it.......and who the hell is rides151 and what does he mean insulting folks and acting like a veteran TT'er? :p” 5:53:54 PM 4/15/07 Way to Go Chappy “I was just suprised to not have scene one complaint on here until now about this weight issue with the atmos. I cant imagine everyone putting 40+lbs in this pack and not noticing the pack having structural issues. Because it was an issue with the three atmos packs i tried on. And keep in mind i love osprey packs and osprey except for this one! Chappy, did you try on both packs, did you understand what i was saying? Why are you buying the gregory instead? last edited: 4/15/07 6:49:34 PM” 6:48:26 PM 4/15/07 “I have some mid-size Vaude rucksacks with the Aero-Flex mesh back. These packs are in the 50 to 60 liter size range with full-size stiffened hip belts that are detachable, which is good for air-travel....remove hip belt and stuff into duffel with pack. The mesh back panel is good and the sizable hip belt carries 30+ pounds pretty well.” 6:49:42 PM 4/15/07 “rides151, I had 40+ lbs in the Atmos 65 with no problems at all. No structural issues, the pack when loaded carries well. Great pack that can handle 40+ lbs. I will be using it again this fall in Canada” 7:34:55 PM 4/15/07 “chappy - He is a simple, unimpressive troll trying out his newly discovered art. He probably is a TT'er with a new, trolling name. Some trolls go out. Some trolls come in and never go out! 7:54:02 PM 4/15/07
