Food? Water purification of some sort? A map?

Sorry, my attempt at humor.

A headlamp would be a wise choice too.

It all depends on how much money you want to spend. My first backpacking trip where the equipment wasn't supplied, I bought a backpacking tent and a sleeping bag. I used my old Navy seabag as my pack, a pool float as my sleeping mat, purification tablets and cooked over an open fire.

You don't need fancy gadgets and new gear to back pack. You can substitute a strong back, determination and flexibility.

The Aqua Mira will set you back 12 bucks
The stove is 40 or so with fuel.

You can pick up a cheap grease pot at Dicks or Walmart.

True. We did some light hiking (packless) at Starved Rock last year which she liked and she enjoys camping so I'm crossing my fingers.

Thinking of joining that one you were talking about yesterday: Mammoth Cave National National Park one.

Have to make sure I can make it though.

This will be a great trip for both of you. You can make it as easy or hard as you want to. We have 3 different routes planned and you can stash gear in a car a mile away from our campsite on Saturday.

Also, if you don't have everything on the list, we will and would share with ya. You will get to see all the extra #&%!$you may want to pick up as well.

Plus you'll meet lots of people and be able to check out all kinds of water filters, stoves etc. Matter of fact, I'll let you use my filter @ Mammoth. Don't buy one, borrow. Check them all out and then chose which one you like best.

I'm going to try really hard to make this one.

I will just be getting back from driving home from FL so I don't know how spent I might be.

Thanks for all your help though Wounded Knee--and everyone else!!

The fun part is you will get to see different styles. Jimmy and myself are always looking to go as light as possible. Other carry extras or bigger tents. Some will be in hiking boots, some in trail runners.

I cannot reserve them yet, but I will be getting two campsites Friday evening at the main campground at the park. People will be arriving at all times of the day/night.

yeah, hiking with a group is great for learning about gear. Much better than people just telling you about what they have. One guy told us how his stove was the greatest stove in the world. I was willing to believe him until I saw him light it and the entire thing, including the grass around it go up in flames lol.

If you make this trip, plan on having the following...

tent
sleeping bag (if the gf needs one, I am sure we can provide)
sleeping pad (unless you want to sleep on the ground)
boots and good socks
food
spork (plastic stuff works well)
clothes
possible rain gear (we can reccomend something)

No sass, so it sounds like explosive stoves is a common occurrence on TT trips :). Wasn't there something about stomping a stove at the early titanium chef events?

To make your meals super easy, especially as a newbie, go with an Enertia or freezer bag style. Then all you have to do is boil water and no dishes. Check out Sarbar's site: www.freezerbagcooking.com for make your own meals or go to www.trailfoods.com and purchase premade stuff. Trust me, you'll be so happy you did.
