Since my other ones shrank on me....and wore out way too fst anyway (sheesh, worn out and not even a year old!)

(So much for ex#&%!$ve trail runners!)

I would like to hear some suggestions. They don't have to be cheap ones, money isnt an issue. What are your favorites for a wide foot?

I know mountainrunner loves his Keen Ochoco shoes... tried Salomon XA Pro 3D, but they were too narrow for him! :)

Spirit, I've been looking for trail runners too. All the hiking boots I've tried since my back thing hurt my feet. But OMG they are SOOOOOO UGLY! I will be reading this thread too.

Tango, hiking assesories are not fashion asessories! Who cares what they look like? the'll be covered in mud most of the time anyway!

Don't get gore tex ones, they tend to fill full of water and then never dry out. Regular ones dry fast. Just go and buy any running shoe that feels and fits good. Trail runners don't have anything different going on excepting their soles are softer and wear out faster. Most running shoes have just as agressive of a tread and the exact same cushioning, the trail runners just have softer soles, supposedly to grip the trail better. I've been wearing my regular running shoes for about two years now and they grip the trail just fine.

Some great brands to try: Brooks and New Balance. I think if you have a running store that fits athletes that is the way to go. The one in our town has you walk barefoot, then fits you in a shoe made for the way you move (pronation supination, etc). Our store does it for free.

I don't like them either but if you have difficult to fit feet (Birch does...he has freakish toes), they are the brand to try.

Sass, they make my feet hurt so bad lol

Every pair of them that I have tried.

The most comfy ever were Hi-Tech for me but they dont sell that locally around here, i'd have to drive pretty far to find a store that does I think....I could be wrong. I wonder if the new Bass Pro Shop down the road has them?

I have heard from various thru-hikers who really like the New Balance 809's. They do mention that you should put a good insole like Superfeet in them

My experience with New Balance is that the lower end shoes hurt my feet but if I invest in the higher end, they feel great. I have wide feet so I have a difficult time finding a good fit. If you're looking for athletic shoes, I really like the asics gel-Kayano!

My hiking boots last years but my athletic shoes never last a year.

Keep in m ind trail runner will NOT last long for hiking. Sure the stictching may remain intact but they may not be useable. The EVA and other insole/midsole material is only meant to last a short while (300-400miles for the ave runner). Hiking with a pack puts more abuse on the midsole. Replace the insoles annually with superfeet or the like. This will buy time. I use my old running shoes for the season then they become work or garden shoes.

Go with fit and comfort first, brand last. Nike and adidas are generally narrower. New Balance has wide widths. Asics run about normal. Try on many.

I'm on my second pair of "Montrail Hardrock trail runners" and love them. The only reason I bought a new pair was for some odd reason my feet grew this past year. I know a lot of people that also have them and like them. Anyway the "07 model is $95.00 but you can get last years model for $62.93.

i have a pair of montrails and they are great shoes. i have heard a lot of complaints but i think they are all fit-related. some shoes just fit some peoples feet better than others.

I have a pair of Asics Trail Eagles now. There is not much life left in them however, and I did not want to drop another 125 on a new pair. These were on sale for 70 so I figured what the hell.

Now I just need to make up my mind on whether I wear these of the gortex boots for the cave trip.
