I need to reserve a tent site the end of June...
and I am soliciting advice on who has been to Baxter. What is the best campground to camp at if you want to hike up to Mt. Katahdin? It would be nice if I could hike from the tent site to the trail and up and then back to the tent site.

Katahdin Stream Campground or Roaring Brook. Abol looks like it's too far from trail?

All three have trails that leave the campground and go up Katahdin, so it depends on what you want...

Roaring Brook gives you choices of trails, and if you choose to go from there to Chimney Pond you have more choices...the other two are up and back the same route. You could do an up and over if you don't mind the iffyness of a ride back to your campsite.

Which campground is nicer? Does anyone have a favorite?

Roaring Brook is very busy, Katahdin Stream is less busy (but still busy) and Abol is probably the least busy of all.

Do you plan on doing other hiking besides Katahdin?

No - hiking up Katahdin to start my AT thru-hike. Trying to put my cookies together and can't seem to find any good maps online yet. Don't have my AT maps yet. I take it that the AT goes from the Katahdin Stream Campground up to Katahdin then? Abol is looking better to me since Katahdin is so busy. That way I can go up to Katahdin from there and then hike the AT down to Katahdin Stream and then back to Abol Campground? Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks!

Abol will be easier to get a reservation at. I've gone up Abol and down Hunt while staying at Abol Stream, it just adds a couple of road walking miles to the hike. Or you can get a ride like we did.

Cool! I read in the data book that the Hunt Trail is the AT...

I have a alcohol stove for you if you are still interested. I just need to make a stand out of shelter cloth (wire squares).

I know - isn't that crazy? Going up to the Boundary Waters in June, then probably paddling the St. Croix River late June before I hit Baxter. Yam - everything going good in Maine? Send me an email - I will give the details of my start date. If you wanna hike with me for a few days or a section - that'd be awesome!
