I'm still dreaming of it, but in reality, I'll probably be out for this one. Maybe someday though? If I wasn't doing my 6 day NCT hike in May, then I probably, could have swung this hike?

I have been looking to do this section of the trail for a while but have never found anyone to do it with...mind if I tag along?

I would be driving up from State College, PA if anyone might be interested in car pooling to save some gas.

You can pick up me and spindle on the way. It would add about an hour to your trip.

Sure Mattdallos no problem. Just be ready for some mileage, I figure we can share some gear and get our weights down pretty light. If anyone is comeing up 95 thru CT we can use my house as a carpool lot and group up. I am about 4.5 miles off 95. I can fit 5 in my truck with gear in the bed.

It is about a 7 hour drive from my house.

"So the trip is on the trip board for the end of September. This will be my longest backpacking trip so far 8 days unsupported, except for a cheese burger at whitehouse landing."

Hey guys, I read this post from lthiker and this is probably a no brainer but technically its not unsupported if you mail a supply drop to whitehouse landing. When I had planned to do this hike 2 years ago, they were accepting mail drops then with advance notice. I'm not sure if that has changed but if it hasn't, then I'm sure you already knew that. There is a website with contact info if you have any questions http://www.mainerec.com/ware5.shtml Sorry if this info is old hat for you guys and I'm sure it probably is, I just thought I would throw it out there...........Steve

It would be a good idea to contact them to see if they accept mail drops. They used to do it for a fee, but I think it had to be pre-arranged.

So anyone else up for a little walk in the woods? This trip is still going even though I haven't been around much. Too much working during the week and not enough sailing on the weekends.

Still really excited about this trip!

Ok I finally got the guide books and maps for the trail so lets start planning.
Is a Friday driving day alright for everyone? That way we could get started on Saturday. It is a 6.5 hour drive from my house (Deep River, CT)and if anyone wants to drive here then carpool that would be cool. I can fit 3 more in my car with gear.

I figure we should pack light and share as much gear as possible but still be self sufficient incase of dropouts.

Do we want to try a mail drop at Whitehouse? I haven't contacted them but I will if we need to.
I will start studying the maps and figure out a good itenerary for the trip.
Do we want to do Katahdin? If not we could spend more time on the trail. I have heard that Gulf Hagas is definately worth the detour.

So let me know if you are in.

GM whats alittle more vacation time? You can't take it with you.

HDrider if you want to come along you are welcome as long as you are ready for a long hike. So far I am thinking about driving up Friday night maybe staying in a hotel or hostel after shuttling cars. Then returning Sat or Sun of the following weekend.

i think i heard maildrops at whitehouse are expensive. unless theyve changed, they do stock a small supply of bp'ing food. they also serve hot meals
crash bang
7:02:45 PM
8/05/07

I don't want to rely on a mail drop if we do not have to, but it will be tough to keep the food weight down.
CB I am looking for lightweight food ideas what did you carry for meals? Especially thru that section?
LtHiker
7:58:12 PM
8/05/07

lt, call whitehouse and ask them if they still have their supply cabinet. it would be cheaper than doing a mail-drop. i think they charge 35 or 50 for maildrop

for breakfast, i like instant oatmeal, for lunch i like bagels with some kind of filler like peanut butter or pepperoni, and for dinner, one of those liptons sides of either noodles or rice, or idahoan instant potatoes

You guys have fun. I'd love to get back into Maine. I loved it there. My wife was not so happy. There's no way I could make the trip for either money or distances, but I will be think of you tromping thru there.

They quit taking mail drops during my thru hike, preferring to gouge with their own supplies. They could have had a change of heart, but I doubt it since heart was conspicuously absent from their operation.

No, I didn't stay at Shaw's, but at that B&B on the main drag operated by a lady whose husband just died. My dogs were aching and it was the closest place to the post office.

Hey Nimblefoot, what kind of stove did you carry? I have a pocket rocket and a pepsi stove. I am thinking about using the pepsi stove for weight. Do you remember if Whitehouse had fuel?

What kind of meals did you use or make on your thru hike? Particularly lunch always seems to be a problem weight wise.

Thanks

twiglets will be in school though...

Twig? Where did these Twiglets come from? Come up for the first weekend.

Ramblinrev, I have reduced the mileage quite a bit the trip is going to take a full 7 days. That means averaging 15 miles a day. Some will be shorter some a bit longer(17mile) After the first 40 miles the terain levels out until you reach Katahdin. I am not planning on Katahdin for this trip. Not enough time.

Lthiker... I am extremely slow....

I can manage usually about 1 mph fully loaded so 15 miles is a long day on the trail. Specially with hills. I would love to get up there again. But I am just not convinced I could manage it. If you could push me to do the 19 mile MST day hike this weekend I might consider it.... but that's a long drive for you. hehehe

LtHiker

8/08/07

Less than 5 days with no food or sleep.... not a real good prospect....

In all seriousness tho... let me think on it.... I would love to try but the wife would have to let me try.

What kind of bail or late join options are there?
Ramblinrev

Lt, I quit cooking in Tennessee to save weight on fuel and to give me more hiking time in a day. When I carried a stove it was a pepsi and worked under all conditions. Worked so well that I even set my sleeping bag on fire with it.

When not cooking I would carry hot dogs, cheese, summer sausage, carnation instant breakfast, peanuts, m&ms, jerky, raw veggies, pastries and other stuff I can't remember. The so called perishables were buried so far in my pack that they were quite insulated from the heat and lasted until the next town. Grilling hotdogs on a stick while thruhiking was kind of cool.

I am signing on as a maybe... but it is a very tentative maybe. If I don't sign on I will have no incentive to try to prepare for it. If I do sign on.... maybe... just maybe I could see my way clear to do this. I have two months right? or there abouts?

I sure would love to.....

HDrider... if you are in the State College area I am not too far from you. You still looking at this as an option? let's talk....

Does anyone have a tarptent they no longer use and would be willing to let me borrow for this trip? Either that, Or I would would like to share a tent on those occasions where we would not aim for a shelter. I have a beercan alchy stove. I have a reasonable sleeping bag and could make do with a version of a lighter sleep pad. A newer lighter pack to borrow would be nice... but not essential.. I could muddle with what I have

Folks.... I have a food dehydrator I would be more than willing to put into action for this trip whether I go or not. Let me know if that would be a help...

Ramblin, there are a few bail out spots, but it is still going to be a long tough hike. I will be sleeping under my 5x8 tarp.

I also have a dehydrator and will be making some dried veggies and jerky for the trip.

Nimble, I think I am leaning more towards the pepsi stove. I need to do some calculating with it to see how much fuel I will need.

I am not fooling myself here. I am not pretending it will be a walk in the park by any means. But hey... I have the tent figured out. I have an ultra-light stove, and the other stuff I can put together from what I already own. So I figure if I put it on the radar....

I am looking at 100 miles of the Mid State trail in a week. we'll see. It could be fun just preparing to do it.
