Here is a schedule that I would like to work around. It is flexible as long as we finish on Friday or earlier. The first number is the mileage to Katahdin the second is the miles between that point and the next. The third number if there is one is the daily mileage. The numbers do not look too bad and from what I have read after the first 40 miles it gets much easier.

Monson 118
Leeman Brook Leanto 111.5 6.5
Wilson Valley Leanto 104.1 7.4 13.9 Sat
Long Pond Stream Leanto 99.4 4.7

I had a bad day yesterday. I am having fewer and fewer bad days, but when they are bad they are very bad. I am going to have to reverse my decision to on this trip. I don't have enough time to make sure I will be able to do it.

I am not happy about this. But I would be less happy getting stuck in the middle of a 100 mile wilderness and throwing the whole trip into the crapper.

You guys have fun.

If I was planning this hike I would shorten day 2, add on to day three and skip the side trip and add on to day four when the legs will be much stronger and you'll be hitting a good stride.

If you still feel good after 10 miles then keep going, but it's a bit disheartening when you fall behind schedule early, especially on a solo trip.

Underplan, overachieve.

Nogranola, the schedule is very relaxed. A few extra mile here a few less there are no problem as long as I finish by Saturday. Atually I am toying with pressing harder in the flatter sections and trying for Katahdin maybe on Saturday. Just have to see what happens.
If I end up doing this solo it will be my first ever solo bakpaking adventure. Could be interesting. I am not worried about gear since all of the tt hikes are "solo" group hikes anyway, but the alone part will be challenging.

I moved up here full time in March - Cape Elizabeth - just south of Portland. So I should be about. The whole area was looking stunning this weekend. It was my first time out there, and the mist on the lakes was what really made it look special - well that and the lakes themselves, the mountains, the crystal clear steams and rivers, the loons calling. It's fantastic country that I'll be exploring more. I only chose to go up there cos I didn't fancy dealing with the August crowds in Acadia.

You'll be fine on the solo bit. I generally find that I am very good company and I can amuse myself for days on end.

But not to worry. I expect that you'll be seeing some Northbounders coming through so you'll have company.

you wont be alone at all. that time of year in 2004, the shelters were full every night. thats not to say it will be like that for you. i think the trail was unusually busy. but you shouldnt get lonely, whatever the case

Oh

The sleeping alone thing doesn't bother me too much. I figure I have heard all of the night time noises by now. Except for a bear, but I don't think that there is abig problem with that in Maine.
I motivation to keep pushing is going to be the harder part. I am used to either having a group to follow or know that there is a group following me. Much easier psycologically . I wonder if I will take more or fewer breaks.
LtHiker
8:59:28 AM

hmmm, I'm guessing fewer breaks because you'll be hiking at your own steady pace. Arrghhh, wish I could go with you :(

Don't forget the TNT!!!!

LOL Bobo I was already trying to calculate how much Wild Turkey I would need to bring to be able to have a liter a night.

Ramblin, they might be big but they haven't been habitualized like the ADK bears.

i take lots more breaks by myself. left to my own devices, im such a stop and go guy. in a group, i stupidly get semi-competitive, and try to be in front, or one of the ones in front. i ran track and cross-country in high school, cant take that racing spirit out of me. i also want the best tentsite in camp.

Ok I called Shaw's and they will shuttle me back to Monson for $100 ouch! But if I don't have any other options I guess I will have to bite the bullet. I am thinking about getting them to pick me up at Abol Bridge on Friday and then starting from Shaw's on Saturday. that way I will not have to have a set time for a pickup at Abol Bridge.
Can anyone think of some things that I will need to take with me that I would not normally take on a shorter hike? This will be my first hike longer than a 3-4 day weekend.
Also I am wondering about the number of Thruhikers that will still be on the trail. Should I pack in some Trail magic for the first couple of nights? I am thinking TNT.

Bring EXTRA Socks!!

I keep one dry pair that I only wear at night when the hiking is done. Rotate the rest as necessary and dry them out if you can.

Yeah, but your jeep don't charge an hourly wage to make the trip up and back. If the roads there are anything like the rest of interior Maine, it is 300 miles of road to go 100 miles as the black fly flies

I think they charge $30 to shuttle hikers on the West Rim Trail in PA. and that's 30 miles.

LMG I will give you $50 to drive me from Abol to Monson, what do you think?

The Shaw's shuttle is $100 for 1-7 people, so if you have a car load it isn't too bad.

Yeah I always bring sleeping socks. I usually wear them for the last day.
