Lock Bumping.....
Try this...take a door key to ANY house, insert it into your lock, and "BUMP" it...

ANY TEN YEAR OLD can do this......

A very good reason to have dogs. 'Course mine would prolly just pee at the feet of any burgular.

My dog, for a treat, would take any would be burglar directly to where we keep "the good stuff".

LOL...the really cool thing about dogs is that while most are nice. Your average Professional burglar is not going to risk it. The Bump thing can work but it takes the right key filed to the right height.

Sass, my dogs are sweet as can be when we are home, but I have had the occasional "fence Jumper" in my back yard...the first few years we had fishing tackle boxes show up every now and then, obviously left in haste.

I just tried that on my office door with my home key. No dice. I would hope not since these locks were around $200 each.

Tilt that is one of those things that also depends on the age of the lock etc. I have seen new locks that would not work on. Additionally given the machining of the tumblers....it can be a bad or good thing. I have seen some higher quality locks become much harder to pick. While older more "used" locks trip with literally no work.

Of course it is much easier to just bash out a window and climb in.

Then there's the tried&true credit card in the doorjam method....

LOL...Chili got it....

Anyone got the standard vinyl sided house? You realize the security issue....Vinyl covering insulating board then insulation, and sheetrock...and you are in.

I surprised someone by opening his combination padlock in one attempt. I just looked at the worn marks from his thumb, put my thumb on the most appropiate spot and moved the dial like I would with my own combination locks. Most of the locks have similar spacing between the numbers. And most of the numbers allow missing them by one or two digits in each direction.

Anybody that really wants to get in will get in. A reciprocating saw, extension cord and an outside power outlet (or a battery operated reciprocating saw) should do the trick.

I'd say 90-95% of burglaries in DC are through an unlocked door or window. The rest are forced entry.

Why bother with learning a skilled method for entering?

Police in my village say most of the crime here is the result of unlocked doors on cars and homes.

Police say, where I'm from that most of the crime is the result of criminals.

They ain't the smartest, but they're dedicated.

Where I'm from, there aren't any police, just a sheriff and a couple Barney Fife deputies.

I have found that if sliding the credit card doesn't work, I can get the door open just by reading the numbers out loud. Works when I buy stuff.

I can see bumping working with a specially cut key & a lot of practice. Long ago, I did lock & safe work for major corporations & Gov contracts. I basically believed that everything would be electronic by now, but folks just had a hard time giving up their keys. Bumping would be similar to picking a lock. 99.9% of the time, a cut house key couldn't "bump" another lock. However, there are only so many combinations for the cheaper locks, so 1 key has a greater chance of actually working in another lock. These odds are increased with master keying.

When I picked locks everyday, I could do it in minutes. Now it would probably take me a couple hours. 99% of house & commercial locks can be opened in a very short time with tools & knowledge.

I still lock my doors. Deadbolts & motion light are a good idea. The average burglar will pick the easiest target.

Remember the classic exchange from The Great Train Robbery:

Reporter: "Do you you have a theory of the crime?"
Police: "We believe criminals are responsible."
Reporter:" So -- You believe criminals are responsible..."
Police: "No --- criminals are completely irresponsible..."

Any stranger who walks into my house uninvited is going to be greeted by 3 good-sized dogs. One of them will definitely bite/maul.

Come on over and bump my lock. I dare you.

lol on criminals!

If only people were as brave as dogs. I just hope the burgular shows up when I'm not around, takes what he wants, and leaves before I get back.

I know a very good (& big) Peace Officer who felt just as you do & was robbed a few years back. What they did was bang on the bathroom wall. ALL his dogs came running into the bathroom. I don't recall if the window was open or they broke it, but the burglars just pushed the bathroom door closed with a pole. At this point, all his security was locked helpless in his bathroom. His house was completly burglarized without immediate incident.

Needless to say, it wasn't a brilliant idea to rob a peace officer's home. The clever burglars (some time later)are still doing time in state prison.

We have a security system. And dang, it is annoying when it goes off-you can't think or move with the howling.
And then again, there is also the second security system we have: Springfield and Kimber ;-)

My dogs would stop at the bathroom door. I've tried to trick them like that before :-) There's a room off to the side of the front door but it doesn't stay closed. I'm set.
