Hiking the Appalachian TrailView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 18 of 18 messages posted.
2007 through hikers “I am planning on hiking the AT this summer. My plan right now is to Flip-Flop the trail. From what I have read it seems to be the best option in regards to weather and physical ability. I don't want the mid-atlantic summer heat and then freeze to death when i get to maine. Just looking for discussions about the trail from past hikers and others planning on hiking it. Do's and dont's, essentials, unessentials, and good food to take.” 5:05:57 PM 3/11/07 “There's oodles of threads on hiking the AT on this site. Just search the archives for other perople's information. Good luck on your hike.” 5:22:45 PM 3/11/07 “Another good source of information is Whiteblaze.net. You can also read trailjournals.com and follow some of the thru-hikers advice. Not to take anything away from the thru-hikers on here, but even most of them read the other sites and post there.” 5:40:55 PM 3/11/07 “White blaze is a great site. http://www.trailjournals.com/ and trailforums.com are also very useful (they are sister sites). http://www.trailplace.com/ is a very tightly managed site dedicated to the AT and has lots of useful info.” 9:38:24 PM 3/11/07 “Flip-floping is a good idea. I'd have finished in '05 had I done so earlier in the year. Good luck.” 10:02:06 PM 3/11/07 See you out there! “I'll be starting my thru-hike next month, Whiteblaze.net is full of info and has been very helpful. It looks very interesting.” 6:19:26 AM 3/12/07 “yep - that's Ginny's site pedxing - she stops around here sometimes when she and JimO are not out hiking - they gave a very good presentation/slide show on their recent CDT thru hike at SoRuck that I enjoyed last edited: 3/12/07 12:08:51 PM” 12:06:18 PM 3/12/07 “Yo Calmwater! I've wasted many a day of my life reading through.” 2:00:50 PM 3/12/07 “Thanks for the links. Found alot of good stuff. I had planned on going to the outfitters and just buying what I needed. Alot of interesting ideas on what to take and how to prepare for the AT. It is quite an endevour just preparing to hike the AT. Like a long homework assignment. Been a few years since I had any homework. I have been thinking about hiking the AT for 20 years, but I have never had time. Now is my chance and I am going to do it. Thanks again.” 5:24:23 PM 3/12/07 “HOI - I didn't realize that was Ginny's site. She's made some good posts here.” 7:45:40 PM 3/12/07 “Good luck slowlighttrek. Keep us updated on your progress!
