2007 through hikers
I am planning on hiking the AT this summer. My plan right now is to Flip-Flop the trail. From what I have read it seems to be the best option in regards to weather and physical ability. I don't want the mid-atlantic summer heat and then freeze to death when i get to maine. Just looking for discussions about the trail from past hikers and others planning on hiking it. Do's and dont's, essentials, unessentials, and good food to take.

There's oodles of threads on hiking the AT on this site. Just search the archives for other perople's information.

Good luck on your hike.

Another good source of information is Whiteblaze.net. You can also read trailjournals.com and follow some of the thru-hikers advice. Not to take anything away from the thru-hikers on here, but even most of them read the other sites and post there.

White blaze is a great site.

http://www.trailjournals.com/ and trailforums.com are also very useful (they are sister sites).

http://www.trailplace.com/ is a very tightly managed site dedicated to the AT and has lots of useful info.

Flip-floping is a good idea. I'd have finished in '05 had I done so earlier in the year. Good luck.

yep - that's Ginny's site pedxing - she stops around here sometimes when she and JimO are not out hiking - they gave a very good presentation/slide show on their recent CDT thru hike at SoRuck that I enjoyed

Thanks for the links. Found alot of good stuff. I had planned on going to the outfitters and just buying what I needed. Alot of interesting ideas on what to take and how to prepare for the AT. It is quite an endevour just preparing to hike the AT. Like a long homework assignment. Been a few years since I had any homework. I have been thinking about hiking the AT for 20 years, but I have never had time. Now is my chance and I am going to do it. Thanks again.
