Hi everyone. I don't like the thought of eating oatmeal every morning for 6 months. I found this site selling powdered eggs. Real eggs. You get 40 eggs for $8.

You can also try freezing them in cooler weather and stashing them in the middle of your pack. I would crack open a few into a ziploc, freeze it, and wrap it with a few layers of paper towels to catch condensation. But it was more than necessary, really. You can just take fresh eggs as-is for a day or two in cool weather (if you can keep them from cracking).

For home use, you can keep them for 6 months if you use 1 of 2 methods.

I picked some up at my grocery store. Check out the baking aisle. They have powdered whites and powdered whole eggs. Can't remember what I paid.

Can you give a link?

I don't think fresh eggs are even doable as he pointed out a 6 month span. I have the powdered eggs sent to me in my monthly Nutrisystems package and they are pretty good. you can add water to the cup they come in and nuke them or mix 'em up like real eggs.

chances are you could hit a town every 3-5 days and resupply with fresh eggs, just depends on what trail you are on

Boil for 30 seconds - they'll last for several additional days.

Coat with vaseline. I guess this keeps air out of their selectively-permeable casing.

Bring a layer. They can easily cover 20 miles a day. Make good watch dogs, too.

I'll bet that site was King Arthur Flour. They've got powdered whole eggs, just the yolks or just the whites.

I've dipped them in boiling water for 5 seconds on a spoon, then I've been out on long paddling trips where they were then used. We all came back alive.

Hmmm... a medium-weight fleece that'll get to the next campsite all by itself and guard it until you arrive... Ha!

The 'orifice' comment reminded me of a doc I knew and some of his stories. Ever see that routine on SNL, "Appalachian Emergency Room"?

On hikes of more than a week, I take a couple of laying hens with me, squeezing eggs out of them as needed. The last 2 nights on the trail I have roasted chicken over an open fire. Dual purpose, one for eggs and the other for roast chicken. I'm sure someone can figure out what to do with the feathers.

"layer" as opposed to broiler or fryer.

"Yard buzzard" for you Ala-by-God-bamians.

True story:
Cawthons Bait Shop, "Sank" Cawthon, proprietor, had coke machines on the front porch. When I was a kid, me et al would walk across from the skating rink and buy cokes. Sank had a night "watch rooster" that bedded atop one of the machines. If you even thought about looking suspicious, the rooster would attack - pecking out eyes and spurring ears, I reckon.

Mountain House sells powdered eggs with bacon.

As far as being runny it is hard to get the water/egg ratio exact. The eggs aren't runny there will just be some water left. Just drain the excess water and pat the eggs with a paper towel.

LOL..is it me or do you guys find that backpackers as a group tend to get less effected by bad food?

A whole bunch of us went to a resturant for Crab legs night one night. Of 27 people 25 all got SEVERE food poisoning...the two of us who did fine...were backpackers.

Probably some merit to that. Bpers get more exposure to bacteria, viruses and protozoans out on the trail. Someone that is always in "civilized" society is always washing their hands properly after using the bathroom, drinking properly cleaned water, etc.

So yeah, our resistance in general is probably higher. I'm pretty sure I had Giardia 15 years ago so that could only have helped those times I've undertreated my water since then.

Hmmmm. Ya reckon?

It could also be argued that the same personality types that ran barefoot and muddy as children (and were then exposed to the nastys), grew up unaffraid to walk in the woods and sleep in the woods.

The shod and shiny grew up to prefer hotels, etc.

Either way, correlations are likely.
