“SAN DIEGO – San Diego FBI chief Dan Dzwilewski, who was rebuked by superiors for publicly defending ousted U.S. Attorney Carol Lam, has announced his retirement.

Dzwilewski, who has been at the helm of the San Diego office since July 2003, sent an e-mail to his agents and staff Wednesday saying he planned to take a post as director of security at Sempra Energy. His last day at the bureau is to be April 30.

Some colleagues found the timing of the announcement curious. On Tuesday, FBI Director Robert Mueller acknowledged during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee that one of his subordinates, John Pistole, told Dzwilewski that his statements on Lam were inappropriate and that he should keep quiet.

Dzwilewski had said Lam's firing was political and would adversely affect ongoing corruption cases.

BOSTON - U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said on Friday he did not recall being involved in talks on dismissing individual federal prosecutors, countering testimony to Congress on Thursday by a former aide that he was involved in such discussions.

"I don't recall being involved in deliberations involving the question of whether or not a U.S. attorney should or should not be asked to resign," he told reporters in Boston.

The dismissals have triggered calls for Gonzales to resign. The administration contends they were justified, based largely on performance or policy differences, but critics charge they were politically motivated.”

His convictions were also overturned on appeal on similar grounds. The Independent Counsel, Lawrence E. Walsh, chose not to re-try North or Poindexter. Weinberger was indicted for lying to the Independent Counsel but was later pardoned by President George H.W. Bush.

Plea Bargains that do not result in a Guilty sentence are often accepted by the Prosecution (Prosecutor may answer this better) in an effort to pass over a hard case (hard to get a conviction) for an easier conviction.

Our DA has walked two or three torches to get the information we needed to get a much bigger fish. Were they guilty...don't know. I though they were, but then There is this NEAT little thing libbies spread around when one of their own gets caught..."Innocent until PROVEN GUILTY".

Two other fired prosecutors - in Arizona and Washington state - have said they believed their ousters were prompted in part by failure to aggressively pursue voter fraud cases.


A person familiar with the congressional inquiry, who insisted upon anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information, described Schlozman as a central figure because he ties together "all of the threads" of the investigation.


According to the person, Schlozman "cleaned out" career lawyers in the Civil Rights Division, replaced them with partisans and was involved in using "vote suppression mechanisms" of voting rights laws, including supporting actions to pare lists of registered voters and backing state laws that toughened voter identification requirements before the 2006 congressional election.


In recent weeks, McClatchy Newspapers has recounted this broad effort to use the power of the Justice Department to affect the outcome of the 2006 election. McClatchy found that, as U.S. attorney, Schlozman brought voter-fraud indictments days before the election against four people who were registering voters for a liberal group in Kansas City. The hotly contested election resulted in Missouri Republican Sen. Jim Talent's defeat, handing control of the U.S. Senate to Democrats.


The House of Representatives and Senate Judiciary committees already have questioned at least 14 former Justice Department officials in the broadening inquiry.


Former Justice Department civil rights lawyers have alleged that the legal campaign was aimed at making it harder for poor African-Americans, who tend to vote for Democrats, to meet voting requirements.
