“The Chinese are not idiots...they watched the fall of Russia (when the russians brought in local troops to break up the Protest and the troops joined the protesters) that is why they waited for a bit before breaking up Tienamen Square. They had to bring troops in from WAAAAY outside the city so there would be no connection to the protesters.

They also watched as the people grew more informed in the Soviet Union and they know eventually they will not be able to contain the demand for freedom.
