Planning on going
Hey everyone I'm planning on hiking the Presidential Range Traverse this upcoming summer. Does anyone have any info on the trail or any tips for me?

Defiantly get the AMC guidebook. You're going to want to study and plan out all potential bailout routes as the weather can change rather fast on the range. Some trails, like Huntington Raven Trail can be very dangerous to descend on a sunny day let alone foul weather.

Pay very close attention to the weather and be ready to cancel or postpone your trip if things look bad. On a sunny day, be sure to bring and wear sunblock, because once on the ridge you will be above treeline for most of the day with little or no shade from the sun.

Be prepared for foul wintery weather. Once when I was on that ridge in August I ran into cold rain whipped up in 60 mph gusts, despite a forecast of 80 degrees with scatterred clouds and gentle breeze down below. It doesn't really matter how scattered the clouds are if you are in one of them.

It can snow any month of the year on Mt. Washington and you can die of hypothermia in the Northern Presis any month of the year. There was a guy who died of hypothermia on Madison in August about 15 - 20 years ago.

Here's a good resource:

I died of hypothermia on Lakes to Madison Traverse in July of 1981.

But then I got better . . .

(so that explains the smell - j/k :Lee)
I looked it up on this cheery website. Actually it was August 1986 so I underestimated how long ago it was. There was also a hypthermia death September 11, 2002 on Madison.

I looked it up on this cheery website:

Here's a trip report that includes a full traverse (it starts on Day 5, ends on Day 7):

Here is a partial traverse with some great TT regulars:
