Pisgah/Nantahalla
I am going to be driving down from Washington, DC to do 4 days of hiking in North Carolina. I heard the Pisgah/Nantahalla area is beautiful, but as I do research, I have noticed that they cover a lot of area, and there are multiple trail maps available for purchase.

Has anyone hiked in that area and can recommend which area in Pisgah/Nantahalla would be nicest to hike and which trail maps are best?

the whole area around Cold Mtn and Shining Rock is really nice - you could spend 4 days in there easy and get up 4 or 5 'sixers' too.

If you're going to be around Nantahala try the Joyce Kilmer area.Pisgah Ranger Station can supply the maps.

the Black Mountain Range is awesome too! Lots of great hiking around Mt. Mitchell. Are you backpacking, dayhiking, car camping or hoteling it?

I'm leaving in about 7 hours for Charlie's Bunyon and that area for four days. Yummy.

I agree with Roam...Black Balsam/Shining Rock/ area are my favorites. However, I would check to see if the parkway is open that far up. I know you can go as far as Mount Pisgah but I'm not sure if they have opened it furhter.

From Natahalla, head to Bryson City, NC and do Deep Creek, Noland Creek or Forney Creek. There are many loops you can make in those areas. Forney to Noland and back to the tunnel is an easy one.

No! I'm still looking for data on your Information Page.

BTW, you'll be driving up, not down, from Washington, DC, to reach the Pisgah/Nantahalla Area. Please don't bring any of those low life characters with you.

LOL.

See the Linville Gorge thread too! And beware, there are so many nice places in the North Carolina mountains that it will take days just to make a decision.

Park off a blue highway, get a dusty map, and seek the places of solitude. Remember:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

US poet (1874 - 1963)
