The shortest approach involves driving north of Springer to where the A.T. crosses USFS Road #42, then hiking south on the white-blazed A.T. one mile to the summit of Springer Mountain.
Directions: From GA Hwy. 52, 9.5 miles east of Amicalola Falls State Park or 8.5 miles west of Dahlonega, turn north at Grizzle's old store (closed, sign for store is damaged). Go 2.0 miles and turn right on USFS Road #28 (look for sign that points to Georgia Wildlife Management Area on left and sign to Jones Creek Road on right). After 2.2 miles, bear left at fork onto USFS Road #77 and go 5.1 miles. Take hard left onto USFS Road #42 and go 2.7 miles to A.T., passing a Benton MacKaye Trail crossing (diamond blazes) along the way. There is a large parking area along north side of road.

Alternate directions: From GA Hwy. 52 in Cartecay (12.1 miles west of Amicalola Falls State Park or 7.4 miles east of Ellijay), turn north on Roy Road between Methodist Church and Stanley's Grocery and go 9.7 miles to end of road. Turn right and go 2.2 miles to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church (these are paved roads). Turn right onto gravel USFS Road #42 and go 6.8 miles to the parking area on north side of road.

NOTE: These Forest Service roads can be quite rough, and may be impassable by car or van in winter or very wet weather. Contact the Chattahoochee National Forest Toccoa Ranger District in Blue Ridge, Georgia (706) 632-3031 for current road conditions.

I mean a road map that I can print out. last time I just walked up from amicalola. With the 1000's of people that make that trip, someone has had to have made a printer friendly map.

I saw a corvette going up that washed out 'road'. I just knew he was going to tear out his oil pan.

How to get to Springer Mt.?

Just get on the AT and head south.

I have those directions Ewker, but there's nothing better than a map (short of an expert guide) for peace of mind. I got what I needed using map quest and a lot of clicking lol.

ms Doolittle, as out of shape as I am, I just might see you on Monday when I come back from Neels gap to get my car. I better make it back on Sunday. It's a long drive back to Wilmington, NC and I have to work Monday morning.

BTW, this may be common knowledge, but when using google earth you can set it to show you where the shelters are on the AT (maybe other trails to, but I didn't check) and if you click the information icon (an "I" on the map) it brings up a picture of the shelter. Pretty cool.

I have to play around with Google Earth more. :) I was scouting out our route at the Grand Canyon via the satellite feature the other night.

I'll keep an eye out for ya, hyway. lol

don't need it now, been there, done that. But thanks. I hitchhiked from woody gap back to springer on fs42. After about 20-30 minutes the first vehicle came by, SUV with two older ladies. They took us as far as High Tower gap. About 5-10 minutes later a pickup came by and they took us to springer. Traffic wasn't heavy on FS42 but the pick up rate was 100%.

I once paid a fella $10.00 to take me from Benton McKaye/Hwy 60 to this trailhead - where I was parked. It was my first hike, and I was too pooped to double-back.
