thrifty - Kelty makes packs that they rename and slightly modify for people like Cabella's. If you look at their typical line of packs you will find one almost identical that you can get reviews on. I have a Kelty that's 4950ci and is basically identical to the Red Cloud. It was $100 at Academy Sports. I've also seen one that's almost identical to their 4000ci external frame pack. These 2 packs both have southwestern names. One is Brazos and I'm drawing a blank on the other name. The one you're looking at is almost certainly another one in that line.

All that said to say I have the one a bit bigger than this and have been happy with it. I bought it for trips with the kids and basecamping trips and it's served it's purpose well.

One more tidbit, I searched Kelty Brazos and found out that they're seconds. They must have failed QA/QC so they rename them and sell them off. I have seen on obvious quality issues with my pack. It's yet to have under 40#'s in it and several of the trips have been rough, off trail tricks with heavy brush or downfall. It's holding up well. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

That looks the the old version of the Red Cloud.

I have the red cloud and used it for canoe camping. It was indestructible. Nice pack but I didn't know anything about sizing one when I bought it. I bought the large model and it didn't fit.

That will be too small for him. I saw that pack as well.

3 pound; 2100 Cu In. pack seems a bit heavy

Looks like the Coyote to me
I have the 4950ci. pack mentioned earlier, its called the "Big Bend." I submitted a review for it yesterday but it hasn't gone through yet. It gets the job done, but so will most any backpack. It just wasn't comfortable for me along with a couple of other minor annoyances (3 out of 5 stars). I got an awesome deal on a "Coyote" from REI during their winter clearance for $50 (normally $150). I put it on and could feel a world of difference right then. This pack seems to resemble a smaller Coyote or a bigger Moraine to me. If the Santa Fe is anything like his brother "Big Bend" I think it would be worth it to spend an extra $50 and go with the Coyote (similarity). Like I said before, I'm sure the pack will do whatever you need it to do, I'm just picky about my gear...
