posted on the dark side..
"Whats the quickest way I can get on the AT from GSMNP? It would be nice to just park, and get on it, but I imagine I will have to get on a connector trail first.

I know you can around Fontana, but I'm trying to stay as close to Gatlinburg as I can.

Thanks"

I guess if I knew something about GSMNP and the region around it, I'd understand why the question is scary.

I would have thought Potential Bear Food would be more appropriate.

tell them to buy a good GPS with a set of expensive maps because it's a long and confusing hike but that it's safe to assume you can get from "point a" to "point b" given the right technology.

Mike got mad at me last weekend for not taking a compass with me while hiking.

the quickest way?

uhHh.. duh. How about pick a place where the AT crosses the road?

get on the AT from GSMNP?

and a map would be too logical? I found myself wondering how you'd completely miss the fact that the AT goes through GSMNP?

would be nice to just park, and get on it, but I imagine I will have to get on a connector trail first.

What am I missing here? On any GSMNP map they list every access point.

I know you can around Fontana, but I'm trying to stay as close to Gatlinburg as I can.

Know you can what? Actually find the AT if you use both hands maybe?

Like I said. This sort of post really scares me. Cue the news and rescue agencies.

I love it when people come on and write that they just bought a backpack and want to know where they should go.

Gawd, with all the maps, guidebooks, magazine articles, compasses, gps units, and message boards offering trips, people haven't got a clue.

I bought a $2.00 guidebook and a 50-cent map and said, "This looks as good a place as any to start out!"

And I was right.

Maps cost a little more, and so do guidebooks, but the technique remains the same.

A sense of adventure and discovery helps.
