“hmmm... now looking at the photos in the U of I contest -- and I'm very, anally picky -- the middle shot is not really a good photo.

If it would have been sunrise or sunset, shot in the "magic" light of day... or a close-up photo filled with the details of the ice or frost... or a better composition... to me that would have been a good photo. The beauty of that ice-filled landscape doesn't show through for me.

So the middle one isn't mine. (there, now you know. The subject was "wild Iowa," as it might have been before pioneers, etc)

That's why we're having the critiquing thread. To help people look for those moments, or at least have a good idea when they've lucked into them.

I can appreciate how photography is subjective. :-) For me, I've been at it long enough and sorta pseudo professionally enough to have engrained permanently into my head what makes a great shot, which must have all of the above -- for me -- PLUS something special that grabs you.

That's why that Outdoor Photographer contest is so tough. WOW!!!! Page after page of shots like that....”
