“9-11 Volunteers Are Eligible For Workers Benefits From NY

An occupational safety and health advocacy group is trying to get the word out to volunteers from this area who helped out in the aftermath of 9-11 that they are eligible for workers compensation benefits from New York State. However, time is running out to register.

43-year-old Matt Quigley of Deptford has not been feeling well for nearly two years:

"My chest is constantly heavy. I got different respiratory problems, spitting’ up every morning and always coughing. I’ve been to Mt. Sinai and got my lungs tested and they told me I got the lung capacity of a 70-year-old."

Quigley attended Thursday’s gathering at the Ironworkers Local 401 Hall in Northeast Philadelphia to hear about the dangerous toxins he was exposed to and how to register for compensation from New York for lost wages and medical treatment.

Philaposh Director Barbary Rahke says this meeting is just part of a broader outreach program:

"It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. You know, you contact an organization and they say 'we don’t really know anyone', and then the next day they call back and say 'we do know someone'. So I think we have our work cut out for us to keep this story alive."

Volunteers have until August 14th to register with New York’s Workers compensation board.

“We were solicited as part of a study that interviewed people who did work in three different zones in the perimeter of Ground Zero. I am not sure of where that went. There's a good chance that it didn't go far, as the attitudes of the "powers-that-be" was to bury this as far as they could and get business up and running.

I don't feel damaged to the levels that the first responders have been. But, I must acknowledge that my lungs haven't been the same since that time. In 2001, I was hit pretty bad for six months with the scariest coughing fits I ever experienced in my life. That seemed to go away after being treated with a steroid and other meds. But, it took a long time. In the past year, I can tell my wind has gotten a little worse. So, I think it may be time to address this again. Thanks for posting it, Geo.”
